James Weldon Johnson is a dedicated magnet school offering two tracks:
Academically Talented
Gifted
When filling out a magnet application, you must select only one of these tracks. If you apply for both your application may be rejected by the magnet office. You can only apply for the gifted track if your student has been certified as gifted by DCPS, otherwise you must apply for the academically talented track. Both tracks have similar curricula and course progressions, because JWJ only offers advanced courses. Students at JWJ must maintain a 2.0 GPA in either program to keep their magnet seat, and must pass all classes, including electives, to be promoted.

These are also critically important for a student to develop to be successful in college and in life!

My Name is Talena, your dedicated doula.

I’m a DONA International Certified Birth Doula based in Jacksonville, FL. My initial introduction to this career was watching the reality show called “Meet the Cromarties”; Antonio Cromartie’s wife was giving birth to his 13th and their 5th baby together. She had an at-home water birth and the engagement of the doula enlightened me. The doula helped her manage the pain with no medication, was supportive and comforting. I was genuinely, in awe. That’s when I said, “that’s what I want to do!”

The main motivation of a doula is to help women have a memorable and empowering birth that the woman desires. The experiences I have had have taught me additional techniques of support and comfort each time. Having me as your doula I will provide comfort, peace of mind, and deliver on your desired birthing experience.

Hello, wonderful moms of our community!

I am delighted to introduce myself as a retired ER Nurse with a passion for ensuring the safety and well-being of families. In my years of experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of CPR, AED, and First Aid training, especially when it comes to our little ones. That’s why I’m passionate about offering Infant, Child, and Adult CPR classes, with a special focus on addressing choking emergencies.

How many times have we heard, “I didn’t know how”? It’s a phrase that echoes in emergency rooms across the country, and I am determined to change that narrative. Every family deserves to feel confident and prepared in the face of an emergency.

Convenience is key for busy moms, which is why I bring the training directly to your group. Whether it’s a Mommy and Me gathering, a playgroup, or any other community event, I’ll be there to equip you with life-saving skills in a comfortable and familiar setting.

Here’s a glimpse of what my classes offer:

Hands-on CPR practice for infants, children, and adults
Techniques for dealing with choking emergencies
First Aid basics for common household injuries
Let’s come together to create a safer environment for our loved ones. Get in touch to schedule a session that fits your group’s needs. Your peace of mind is just a class away.

Sincerely,
Karen Ketchie, RN

Pura Bean Coffee was founded on the principal of enjoying coffee and life. It all began after several excursions to Costa Rica where we fell in love with the local coffee and lifestyle. As raving fans we decided it would be fun to make our own coffee back home in Jacksonville, FL. Using our daughter’s popcorn popper we began learning the craft of roasting and creating blends of coffee for friends and family. Our obsession grew to roasting coffee for real in the back of our own shop, where we serve up specialty blends from all over the world and deliver to local retailers in our 1979 Orange VW Bus.
To this day we continue the pursuit of providing you that perfect cup, so you slow down, drink coffee and enjoy life!

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Murray Hill incorporated in 1916 and remained a separate municipality until its annexation by Jacksonville in 1925. In 1941, the heirs of J. Graeme Drew sold the park property to the City. Several athletic associations have used and helped maintain the playground over the years including the Murray Hill Youth Assoc., the Wright Youth Assoc., and most recently the Murray Hill Athletic Assoc. Improvement projects in 2001-2003 added two scoreboards, a walk path, fencing for two T-ball fields, a water feature, three portable shelters, a playscape and more.

Murray Drive Playground is one of four City parks in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. The property was platted in 1910, and the street along the site’s eastern side was originally named Harkisheimer Avenue. William Harkisheimer was one of the developers of the Edgewood subdivision and probably Murray Hill Heights also. In later years, officials changed the street’s name to Murray Drive. The County purchased the land for the park in 1947, and acquired another small portion in 1961. Since Murray Hill’s oldest house was built in 1897, the area has grown to over five thousand homes in 2003. The small neighborhood park provides children’s play equipment and two benches for relaxation, under a canopy of spreading oak trees.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. In 1929, the City’s second playground for African-American children was established there and named La Villa Playground. Florida Dwight (1886-1977), the playground’s first recreation director, pioneered organized recreation for the City’s African-American community from 1918 (with the opening of Oakland Park) until her retirement in 1950. To honor her years of devoted work, the playground was renamed in 1983, and then designated a local historic landmark in 1995.

It’s like having a doctor in the family. Over three generations families are a part of the Jacksonville Pediatric practice. It’s no wonder that moms and dads, and even grandparents, return to our pediatric practice with their children and grandchildren; it’s a family tradition. Established in 1948 by Dr. James Lanier, the fundamental values: love of children and staying abreast of the latest medical advancements and technologies, remain firmly entrenched.

New Jacksonville Pediatrics members are carefully screened for their professional credentials, certifications and their outstanding academic achievements. As a closely knit group, we think of ourselves as a second family, we want professionals who share our ideals: excellent listeners, a parent’s advocate, the ability to befriend children and gain their confidence, and a person who brings to our office unbridled enthusiasm, energy, and a love of their chosen profession.

John E. Ford is a magnet montessori school. The Main Premises of Montessori Education are:
Children are to be respected as different from adults and as individuals who differ from each other.
The child possesses an unusual sensitivity and intellectual ability to absorb and learn from his environment that is unlike those of the adult both in quality and capacity.
The most important years of a child’s growth are the first six years of life when unconscious learning is gradually brought to the conscious level.
The child has a deep love and need for purposeful work. He works, however, not as an adult for completion of a job, but the sake of an activity itself. It is this activity, which enables him to accomplish his most important goal: the development of himself, his mental physical and psychological powers.

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10.

Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

At BurgerFi, we never ever settle. That’s why we craft our all-natural burgers using only the Top 1% of natural Angus beef, always sourced from the best ranches in the country and free of hormones, steroids and antibiotics. We even go the extra mile with our other chef-created favorites, like our hand-cut fries, Veggie burger, Grilled Chicken sandwich, and plant-based Beyond Burger. Oh, and try to save room for our frozen custard desserts. So go on, reward yourself with something better. You deserve it.

At Pediatric Eye Consultants of North Florida, we have adapted our office and our personnel to provide a fun and friendly environment in which children can feel at ease. We are comfortable with non-verbal children, children with developmental delays and those with physical or sensory handicaps. Each child’s needs are met individually and with utmost concern. Pediatric Ophthalmologists are a rare and special group of physicians. There are less than 1000 active members of the American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) in the United States. To be an active member of AAPOS, one must complete one or two additional years of approved fellowship training following a 3 year residency in comprehensive ophthalmology. Members are certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and must devote at least 75% of their practice to children and adults with strabismus. We are dedicated to the care of children and adult strabismus patients. It is what we do every day, all day.

Bean Tree Pediatric Dentistry is an office like no other. We’ve taken the conventional office paradigm and turned it on its head. Our pediatric dental office is what we like to call the anti-dental, dental office. We designed our practice to be like a cozy home. A place where children don’t have to feel afraid to visit the dentist. A place where they can come in, take off their shoes, plop down on the giant bean bag and watch a movie. You see, we love kids here. Most of us have one or more and those that don’t, act like kids themselves. It’s all part of loving what you do and why our motto is “We love ‘em like our own”.

We believe that technology is advancing so rapidly that many people and businesses are left behind because they lack the knowledge and the resources to participate.

The answer, the solution… for us to not only survive but to thrive is found in a Collaborative and Responsible Tribe where people care for and support one another.

This is our platform where we collaborate. Combine our efforts and energy so that we can help others get what they want. We get what we want. And make the world a better place in the process.

We keep more resources in the community to better our schools, homes, businesses, people, and families.

Navigating the courts and legal processes can be intimidating and confusing. Often those that need legal help the most can’t afford it.

The mission of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is to provide high quality legal assistance to low income and special needs groups – to empower them to accomplish energetic and affirmative advocacy, all to alleviate the circumstances, incidents and causes of poverty and discrimination.

Developed during the Great Depression and subsequent recession of 1937, the organization that has become Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. EDS is proud to be a locally-owned and family-operated business for 33 years. In 1985, Erin Bramlett started Educational Development Services, Inc., to assist students on a one-to-one basis so they could grow and thrive throughout their educational journey. She believed in Preparing for Success and poured that into her students. In 2001, daughter, Nancy Barnard took over EDS after practicing engineering for 2 and law for 15 years. In 2006, Erin regretfully passed away. For over 15 years, Nancy proudly carries on her mother’s legacy to the Jacksonville community, providing success for one child at a time.

Nancy’s philosophy is Reaching New Heights. She knows the struggles students endure and strives to help them reach new heights on their path to success. Nancy and her husband John raised three children. Each is different with unique struggles. Over her years with EDS, she has seen hundreds of students from most schools in the Jacksonville and surrounding area. Each student presents unique and individual needs on their path to success.

LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN PREPARE YOU FOR SUCCESS!

Our firm’s cornerstones are passion, compassion, integrity and preparation.

That’s where we start- passion. We have a passion to help, a passion to win and a passion to learn about you and your case. From lawyers (not investigators or warm bodies) meeting with clients from day one, to making sure your story is told the right way with justice in mind, our team longs to help and grow as members of one community- together.

Once you have a passion to help, you need compassion to help you identify with people- clients and jurors, alike. Our firm was chosen to serve and has served for over a decade in this community. We live in this community. We give back to this community. Having compassion and understanding for our clients problems, lets us serve them better.

Integrity means putting the client first while doing things the right way, so we can garner respect from judges, mediators, jurors, other lawyer and others in our town. If a lawyer is more concerned with the costs their firm charges you and the service they provide, you should consider that. Some even charge interest on stamps. If they are so busy watching their money, are they paying attention to yours? If they are cutting corners, won’t their peers and judges notice? The answer is yes.

Is your lawyer prepared when you speak to him or her? Does he know your name? Our lawyers work all day and many nights striving to make a difference in clients lives. Our awards and recognition, verdicts and recognizes expertise were the result of hard work and preparation. Don’t settle for less.

Steak n Shake logo
Jacksonville, FL, United States 4.24 mi

For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.”

The Kids Workshops are FREE how-to clinics for children. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin.

The PRS Running Club of Jacksonville Florida was founded by a group of friends who felt that the Jacksonville running community needed a running club where, on any given day of the week, runners of all abilities could meet up with their friends for a hard run and a good time.

Unlike other running clubs in Jacksonville Florida, the PRS Running Club has its own coach, Paul McRae. Coach McRae, a legendary runner in the Jacksonville community, is a native of New Zealand and president of Personal Running Solutions, a local Jacksonville business that provides customized training plans and offers one on one training sessions. In fact, the symbol of the PRS Running Club, the running kiwi, affectionately known as “Paul”, is the national symbol of New Zealand, known for its ability to survive and persevere even in the most adverse of conditions and circumstances, qualities that are important to any runner. Coach McRae, who has run a 2:27:50 marathon, 1:04:35 half marathon, 28:53 10K and 13:57 5K, along with winning the inaugural Melbourne Marathon and hundreds of local races, attends most of the group runs providing encouragement, inspiration and insight.

The PRS Running Club, with a mission of promoting and encouraging running by educating the community about the benefits of long distance running and endurance athletics, has monthly social events, annual running retreats, puts on fun races to bring new people into running (like the Bold City Beer Run Series and the Krispy Kreme Challenge), and provides scholarships to deserving local high school athletes.

Making Jacksonville Home.
I was raised in Jacksonville and have fond memories of growing up here. I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in International Marketing and a Minor in Spanish. I studied International Business while living in Valencia, Spain. I worked as a non-profit director for Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International and then as a Project Manager for E-proDirect, an online marketing agency for the Hospitality Industry. After moving back home to Jacksonville I worked as a Lead Field Organizer for Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods. Throughout all of my work experience, my favorite thing I have done has been investing in Real Estate, which I started doing while attending FSU. I have always loved the freedom real estate has given me and my family to work extra hard and see real results. I also am passionate about my city! I love seeing it grow and improve.
