Born in 2014, Congaree and Penn began as a tiny rice farm. Since then, we’ve grown from four acres of rice paddies into a thriving farm of orchards, you pick vines and fields, and home to thousands of honeybees and fancy chickens. Congaree and Penn boast the largest (and youngest) Mayhaw orchard in the world, after planting over 5,000 trees throughout the past few years. Native to the South, this fruit-bearing tree has inspired us to seek out and plant other native and hearty Southern species.

In 2016, Congaree and Penn began juicing seasonal fruit from local farms to produce shrubs, our nod to a Colonial-era pastime. As we expand our orchard and pressing and milling operations, Congaree and Penn continue to innovate and introduce new produce and products.

We also fancy the farm as a stunning destination for weddings, farm dinners, tours, and workshops.

Kent’s U-Pick Fresh Blueberry Farm uses no pesticides on the blueberry bushes. Reservations required. Listed on Facebook. They try to estimate how plentiful the berries will be to accommodate and if weather permits. The season usually lasts six weeks. Mid-May to end of June. During blueberry season, the blueberries do not ripen all at the same time. There are no restroom facilities. Normally schedule Wednesday or Saturday from 7:30 to 12 noon for picking. If the schedule is not on Facebook, call to see what days are open and to make reservations.

Directions: Blueberry field is located at the end of Thomas Mill Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Starting at Lem Turner Road and Highway I – 295, head out north on Lem Turner Road (SR-115) toward Callahan, and go 3.5 miles to Braddock Road. Turn left onto Braddock Road, go one block, and turn left onto Thomas Mill Road (the first part is short and paved). Continue straight onto the dirt part a short distance and look for the windmill. Turn right at the windmill for the entrance and parking. The parking area can accommodate 30 vehicles at a time. Concord Park is located in the in the Lake Forest section of northwest Jacksonville, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and U.S. Interstate 95. After filing of the first plat in 1926, it was not until around 1944 that development began again in Lake Forest, whose streets and parks exhibit an American Revolutionary War theme. Concord Park is one of two half-oval parks that were named and platted by the developers in 1944. Battles at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775 between the colonial Minutemen and the British redcoats marked the beginning of the War. Through the years, the park has remained a small, neighborhood facility with play equipment for the children, and a major improvement project in 1999 added picnic facilities, new benches, and a water fountain. With several towering pine trees providing shade and visual relief, the park offers a place for fellowship and relaxation.

Hammond Park is located in west Jacksonville at the intersection of 12th Street and Melson Avenue. In 1923, the property comprised part of a site used for airplane takeoffs and landings, and was named Paxon Field for the tract’s owner, E. H. Paxon. After opening in 1955 as Paxon Park, the name was changed to honor Duval County Commissioner Joseph F. Hammond (1885-1967), who, except for two years, served continuously from 1921-1961. Also he served as president of the National Association of County Officials. Three area schools and the Hammond Senior Center (formerly the Youth Center) reside near the park. In 1994 a major renovation of the ball fields occurred, and an improvement project in 2004 added a new building with a two-story scorebox, restrooms, and a handicap-accessible concession stand.

Before You Tie the Knot

Before You Tie the Knot is for couples and singles interested in marriage at some point in their lives. The instructor will share effective and proven skills to a happy, healthy relationship, such as commitment, positive communication, and positive bonds, as well as effective and proven skills for handling conflicts. She will also discuss the eight needs of every partner, parent and child, the rewards of positive parenting (including step parenting), the importance of money management, and the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle. Couples who attend all classes are eligible for a discount on their marriage license.

AIR FORCE JROTC MAGNET The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a magnet program that focuses on leadership education to instill values of citizenship, character, and integrity. Upon completing three years of the Air Force JROTC program, students receive a Certificate of Completion. If cadets elect to enlist in the Armed Forces, the Certificate of Completion from the JROTC program will allow them to enlist as a pay grade E-3 in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or an E2 pay grade in the Marine Corp.

HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY The Health Sciences Academy offers a unique educational experience to students who wish to pursue a career in the health care industry. Upon graduating from Andrew Jackson, students have the entry-level job skills needed to successfully pursue careers in many of the various health-related occupations. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience and rigorous critical thinking skills. This program also enables students to meet high school graduation requirements while earning college credits.

Our Community Education program provides quality services and programs after-school that involve various groups and agencies throughout our community. These include classes, homeowner’s groups, Scout troops, support groups, health and crime-related workshops and more.

The playground at J.P. Small Park was renamed in June 2007 to honor Eugene M. GLover. Mr. Glover, who passed away in 2006, was affectionately known by friends, colleagues and the young people he worked with as the “Gentle Giant.” He spent 42 years working in a variety of capacities for the PREC Department; most notably at J.P. Small Park, which was named for his high school coach and mentor. A sign has been erected in the park officially naming the playground for the former Stanton High School and Florida A&M University athlete and brother of the former sheriff, Nat Glover.

I’m a DONA International Certified Birth Doula based in Jacksonville, FL. My initial introduction to this career was watching the reality show called “Meet the Cromarties”; Antonio Cromartie’s wife was giving birth to his 13th and their 5th baby together. DLC Nurse & Learn (DLC) is a quality, child care facility for children with severe disabilities and medically complex conditions as well as “typically developing children. Children attending DLC can have a wide range of disabilities, including Downs Syndrome, Arthrogryposis, Tuberous Sclerosis, Tay-Sachs Disease, Cerebral Palsy and seizure disorders. Due to the special needs of the children served, DLC maintains a professional staff including a Registered Nurse, Nursing Assistants, Special Education Teachers, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists. We are an inclusion center, providing services for all of God’s beautiful children.

DLC currently offers full and part-time special education preschool, extended day for children (birth to 3 years) and for older students attending public school (3-22 years of age). Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. In 1929, the City’s second playground for African-American children was established there and named La Villa Playground. Florida Dwight (1886-1977), the playground’s first recreation director, pioneered organized recreation for the City’s African-American community from 1918 (with the opening of Oakland Park) until her retirement in 1950. To honor her years of devoted work, the playground was renamed in 1983, and then designated a local historic landmark in 1995.

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

Program Offered:

Murray Hill is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits at his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

Murray Drive Playground is one of four City parks in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. The property was platted in 1910, and the street along the site’s eastern side was originally named Harkisheimer Avenue. William Harkisheimer was one of the developers of the Edgewood subdivision and probably Murray Hill Heights also. In later years, officials changed the street’s name to Murray Drive. The County purchased the land for the park in 1947, and acquired another small portion in 1961. Since Murray Hill’s oldest house was built in 1897, the area has grown to over five thousand homes in 2003. The small neighborhood park provides children’s play equipment and two benches for relaxation, under a canopy of spreading oak trees.

Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Murray Hill incorporated in 1916 and remained a separate municipality until its annexation by Jacksonville in 1925. In 1941, the heirs of J. Graeme Drew sold the park property to the City. Several athletic associations have used and helped maintain the playground over the years including the Murray Hill Youth Assoc., the Wright Youth Assoc., and most recently the Murray Hill Athletic Assoc. Improvement projects in 2001-2003 added two scoreboards, a walk path, fencing for two T-ball fields, a water feature, three portable shelters, a playscape and more.

Pura Bean Coffee was founded on the principal of enjoying coffee and life. It all began after several excursions to Costa Rica where we fell in love with the local coffee and lifestyle. As raving fans we decided it would be fun to make our own coffee back home in Jacksonville, FL. Using our daughter’s popcorn popper we began learning the craft of roasting and creating blends of coffee for friends and family. For 30 years, Sally Corporation has hosted thousands of visitors for a free tour of their robot factory. Tours are offered on Tuesday and Thursday, hourly from 9am-1pm. Minimum age is 7. No tours during July or August.
