Keeping Kids’ Minds and Bodies Active in Summer

Healthy Kids Day

School is almost out for the summer and as a parent, you are faced with a daunting task: to fight summer boredom for your kids while still keeping their bodies and brains active. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential related to hunger, water safety, safe places to play, learning, and physical health.

It’s no surprise that according to statistics, kids are less physically active and engaged in learning during the summer months. In fact, research shows that kids gain weight two to three times faster during the summer months than during the school year.

To address this issue, the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast will celebrate Healthy Kids Day presented by Gator Bowl Charities and in conjunction with the First Coast Kids Triathlon. Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative that kick starts summer activity and helps to motivate kids to reach their physical and cognitive potentials all year long. The free event will be held on Saturday, May 2 and will feature some of the following physical and educational activities:

  • Obstacle courses
  • Rock wall
  • Sports Clinics
  • Human hamster balls
  • Camp games and craft station
  • A petting farm presented by Black Hog Farm
  • YMCA vertical garden and seed planting station
  • Science shows and experiments presented by Mad Science.
  • A Guinness World Record attempt for World’s Largest Family Boot Camp.

As if these fun activities weren’t enough, kids will receive a Gator Bowl Charities Healthy Kids Passport, where children can earn one ticket to the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl by completing a series of activities that support healthy-living, youth development and social responsibility throughout the year. Gator Bowl Charities partnered with the YMCA to create this passport so that area young people have the opportunity and inspiration to make healthy living choices all year long.

The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast’s Healthy Kids Day event takes place at Everbank Field on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
