Woman attacked while jogging. Unfortunately, it’s a news headline (two local ones so far this year!) that is becoming all too common. Most women are concerned about safety but how many of us actually do anything more than think about it?
I decided it was time I walked the talk and began researching self defense classes in the area. After reading about Todd Williams, a very accomplished runner turned martial arts black belt with a vision for safety, I signed up the moms of Jax Stroller Strength for a RunSafer clinic.
RunSafer is not a yell “NO!” then spray mace kind of self defense. Todd Williams’ black belt in Jiu Jitsu is the foundation of the class. He teaches practical moves to help woman if say, the attacker actually gets you down on the ground or is choking you. It’s scary to think about being in that position but even scarier if you have no way how to get yourself out of it!
The one hour clinic is spent practicing moves to teach the body to respond automatically. With each repetition, I gained confidence that if I was attacked I could overcome my fear, react and avoid becoming a victim. Todd will be the first to say an hour class is not enough and to practice, practice, practice. He also offered tips to avoid becoming a target.
For example, try to avoid walking or running the same route, at the same time on the same day every week because criminals prey on predictability. His principles go well beyond running. Being aware of your environment from which spot you choose when parking on a Girls Night Out to walking to your car with your hands full of groceries can make a difference. Though I wish it weren’t true, bad people are out there and woman are often the target. If you are ready to do more than think about your safety, sign up for a RunSafer class this fall.
The next class is offered on August 4th. Check out the events calendar on Jacksonville Running Company‘s website for more information. The class is only $20 when nothing is more valuable than your safety!
Thank you to Jacksonville Running Company for sponsoring this post and for the recommendation, proving once again you are in the know for the community. JRC promotes RunSafer because runners’ safety is #1 when you are out on the road!
