JMB First Impressions
I always tell clients the hardest part of a workout is simply showing up. A week into our month long challenge at Timed Exercise, the JMB team is happy to say “been there done that!”
We not only showed up, we conquered rings, kettlebells, frog sit ups and most importantly, our fear. Here’s what we learned about T:E and ourselves.
1. This Ain’t No Gym!
No more guessing what you should do while you are standing clueless in the weight room. T:E workouts are created by professional trainers and designed to give you a full body strength workout. Workouts incorporate cool (ok some may describe them as intimidating) equipment like rings, box steps, powerstands and high bars that will push your body and your mind out of your comfort zone…a vital ingredient to building muscle and shedding weight.
2. Anyone Can Do The Workout!
Many have seen our posts and pics hanging from rings, lifting weighted bars and surrounded by kettlebells causing doubt if you aren’t a fitness guru. Stop right there. What you couldn’t see in those pictures were the two personal trainers perusing the room dolling out customized advice on form, modifications and recommending which weights to use. Vicky, our co-founder, balked at the pull ups until Melanie, the trainer, put her on box step and showed her she could. No matter what you think you can’t do, a trainer will show you how you can do it.
3. Time Is On Your Side!
The workouts are intense but thirty minutes literally flies by. Mounted on the center of the wall is a red clock that serves as your motivator and savior. It counts up to 30:00. Each tick pushing you to get the reps done all the while giving you hope that you can last “x” amount of time. There is a five minute warm up and review of the exercises as well as cool down at the end of the session so expect to be there 45 minutes.
4. To Each His Own!
Fitness classes sometimes cause people to feel self-conscious, not T:E. All team members agree that you only have time to care about yourself…well, yourself and that red clock. The workout is done in a “pod”, a small rectangle that holds a mat and the equipment/weights for the day. Two people workout inches apart and you’ll either be totally consumed with the task at hand you’ll never even look at that person or you feel motivated by your neighbor because if they are still going so are you.
5. Hurts So Good!
Not one person would say the workout wasn’t tough enough. There is no doubt your muscles will be challenged and you will be sore. More than that though is how quickly you’ll like it! It only takes one class to gain confidence in your abilities and to want more. Shannon, who admits she isn’t a huge fan of fitness, describes the workouts as “killer, but in a good way!”
