Tips & Tricks for Natural Ways to Tackle Cold and Flu Season

These tips & tricks on tackling cold and flu season naturally are brought to you by Hyland's.

If you’re like me, the fall season is your jam for all the right reasons like cheaper utility bills and a hoodie and jeans as an acceptable fashion statement! What’s not my jam is that the temperature drop means cold and flu season. As a mom of two young kids, I’ve accepted that catching colds are inevitable, especially now that my daughter is also in school. Using natural methods to prevent those colds and tackling them once they’re here is key to keeping our kids as healthy as possible during this season.

Cold and Flu

It’s no secret that children are going to catch a cold now and then, typically 6-8 times a year. Little ones are more susceptible to germs since they attend school, have a habit of touching their noses and mouths often, touch other kids, and participate in more hands-on activities.

Here are some tips to help prevent kids from catching colds:

  • Teach your child to wash his hands often.
  • Sharing is not always caring! Tell him to not share food, cups, and anything else that would go near another person’s mouth. Remind him that if he has a cold, to not share his germs either; that he needs to cover his mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and to keep his distance from other kids.
  • Dress for the weather. Now that the crisp autumn weather has kicked in, dress your child in layers of clothes to easily put on or remove during the day.
  • Maintain a healthy diet to keep up your child’s immune system. Encourage him to eat fresh food and a well-balanced diet. Take advantage of soup and slow cooker season by throwing in extra vegetables into his meal.
  • Keep him hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Unfortunately, as great as these tips are, we all live in the real world, and your child will probably end up with a cold at some point during this cold season. When that happens, I try to avoid giving my kids medicine with unnatural ingredients that may do more harm than good. Check out the tips I use below for homeopathic remedies to combat colds.

Sick KidIdeas for natural ways to tackle your child’s cold:

  • At the first signs of a sore throat or a cough coming on, have your child gargle warm water and salt.
  • Try giving your child raw honey to help soothe the throat and to help reduce coughing.
  • Make sure your child is drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and avoid him getting over-tired.
  • Feed your child food high in vitamins.
  • Reduce your child’s consumption when it comes to dairy products like drinking milk, which can create mucus buildup.
  • Use a humidifier in the child’s room while they sleep. You can have him sit in the bathroom for a few minutes to use the steam from the shower to help clear up his airways, too.
  • Remind your child to wash his hands and avoid touching his nose, mouth, and eyes.
  • Get a new toothbrush once the cold is gone.
  • Give your child medication free of dyes, aspirin, and other harmful chemicals.
