Wine On A Dime: In Search Of The Cheapest Wine In Jax

1

Let’s face it. There comes a time when we all need a break from our mini-me’s and crave adult conversation. There are even times when we crave not only adult conversation but also (dare I say it) a glass of wine. And since wine seems to be the adult beverage of choice among my mom friends, let’s have a glass.

I decided that if we were going to have a glass of adult grape juice, I may as well save some money. And since we are finally going out, we shouldn’t stay up all night, because those kids wake up really early. So let’s have a glass of wine that is under $4 and before the sun sets.

I suggest having your hubby take over the kid’s nighttime routine so you can grab a mom-friend (or two) and check out these budget-friendly spots around Jax. We have you covered every day of the week!

Joe’s oceanfront bar & playground

Joe’s Crab Shack  (Jax Beach)
When to go: Tuesday, all day
Wine price: $3
Is the food cheap: Yes! $2 appetizers all day on Tuesday, including fried pickles and popcorn shrimp (um, yes please).
Could I bring the kids? One of their bars overlooks a private sandy playground
Bonus: Joe’s is right on the beach, with a deck facing the ocean

Bonefish Grill (Mandarin & Jax Beach)
When to go: Wednesday, 4-6:30pm
Wine price: $3.25 (every day during happy hour)
Is the food cheap: It’s not the most inexpensive on the list, but on Wednesdays they feature their famous Bang Bang Shrimp for only $6!
Could I bring the kids? Bonefish isn’t the restaurant that immediately comes to mind when you think of kid-friendly, but my kids LOVE coloring all over tables that are topped with white paper!

Moon River  (Riverside & Fernandina Beach)
When to go: Wednesday, 4-10pm
Wine price: $2.50
Is the food cheap: Not necessarily cheap, but it is GOOD. With a 92% rating on Urban Spoon, it is arguably the best pizza on the Westside.
Could I bring the kids? It’s pizza,- of course you can!

Carrabbas (Orange Park, Jax Beach & Baymeadows)
When to go: Thursday, 3-7pm
Wine price: $3.35 (every day during happy hour)
Is the food cheap: If you sit at the bar or at a bar table, appetizers are half off during happy hour. With options such as steamed mussels, meatball & ricotta flatbread & zucchini frittes, you are sure to find something shareable with your mom-friends!
Could I bring the kids? Carrabba’s has a wonderful coloring/activity book for kids, but even better than the crayons are the pizza dough they give the little ones to play with at the table! (Trust me, you can keep them occupied for longer than you think with dough….)

Pusser’s Bar & Grille 816 A1A North, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32082 (Ponte Vedra Beach)

Is the food cheap: They feature a few appetizers for $5 during happy hour, such as Ahi poke crisp, spinach and artichoke dip, fresh, steamed mussels and pulled pork potato skins
Could I bring the kids? They have an outside deck with a fantastic ocean breeze that the kids would love.

Thanks to a few wine loving JMB fans, here are a few additional restaurants with fantastic vino prices!

Millhouse Steakhouse 1341 Airport Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32218 (Northside)
When to go: Any day, 4-10pm
Wine price: $2.49
Is the food cheap: It’s not as pricey as you may think for a steakhouse specializing in Prime, custom-aged, mid-western beef!
Could I bring the kids? Sure! The atmosphere is that of a bustling steakhouse, which fits right in with less-than-quiet children.

Al’s Pizza  (Atlantic Beach, Intracoastal West, Ponte Vedra Beach, Mandarin, Baymeadows, Riverside, St. Augustine)
When to go: Thursday, 11am-10pm
Wine price: $1 La Terre Wine
Is the food cheap: You get what you pay for with pizza. Al’s was voted “Best Pizza in Jacksonville” for 16 straight years. A large 16-inch pizza will run you about $24, but it is worth it!
Could I bring the kids? Yes! And with unique Italian selections for the kids such as such as Ziti, Lasagna and tri-colored tortellini, it is a great place to broaden your child’s dining choices.

Mellow Mushroom  (Jax Beach, Tinseltown/Southside, Avondale, Fleming Island)
When to go: Thursday Ladies Night (at the Jax Beach, Southside & Fleming Island location), 6pm-2am (yes AM, as in the morning!)
Wine price: $1 at the Jax Beach & Southside location, $2 at the Fleming Island location
Is the food cheap: No, but it is fantastic and unique (and you are saving tons on booze, so you can afford to spend a little more cash). Try the Bayou Bleu or Red Skin Potato Pie if you are feeling adventurous!
Could I bring the kids? Yes- Mellow is a great place for the kids. With their hippie, colorful decor and awesome Wikki Stixs each child receives, kids are guaranteed to stay entertained while their pizza bakes!

These are just a few of the places to get a cheap glass of wine in Jax- what are your favorite spots?

Brucci’s pizza has $1 slices and $1 wine and draft beer on Thursday 4-10pm.
