Make Math Fun with Revolution Math

Math can be frustrating for many children, something my son is experiencing this school year. He’s never struggled with math before, but as a 3rd grader, he’s more intimidated with the new concepts he’s learning. He doesn’t always find the patience to learn it, and the teaching methods our kids are being taught may be different from how we were taught, making it more difficult for us as parents to help our children with their lessons. Luckily, a little extra help combined with an adventurous method of teaching goes a long way! That’s exactly what I was grateful for when my son participated in tutoring sessions through Revolution Math.

I was already considering a tutor, so when we had the chance to try Revolution Math from the convenience and the comfort of our own home, I was thankful my son was open to the idea. He saw it as a fun chance to practice his math skills while interacting with other children his age. I’m sure my son also enjoyed the extra time having access to my computer during his tutoring lessons!

Revolution Math understands that math can be a source of anxiety for kids. They’re also aware that making learning a fun experience makes a huge difference. My son looked forward to the tutoring lessons each week. It was nothing like homework because the kids were taken on an adventure during their one-hour session. They solved mysteries by completing math problems in order to move on to the next step in their journey.

The story they read and problems they work on are on screen, but they also have workbooks to accompany the lessons.

Each session lasts one hour, once a week and is accessible through a tablet or computer. The kids are placed in groups of four students who can see one another on the screen. After the first tutoring lesson, my son was comfortable with the other students in his group and with the tutor, who did an amazing job with the kids.

The lessons coincided with what he was learning in school and even introduced some math topics he will learn later this year. I know he will be more confident and excited to raise his hand with the answers! The tutor was patient with each child and showed the students alternative ways to reach the answer that made it easier for them to understand.

I saw the lightbulb go off in my son’s eyes as he lit up whenever he understood a new lesson.

Revolution Math research shows that the best way to engage young learners is through the interaction between characters and storytelling. Each student receives a kit that includes two adventure workbooks, a binder with scratch paper, cutout masks to go along with the adventure story, and a welcome letter introducing them to “Revo’s Journey,” which describes the mission they’re embarking on for their tutoring sessions. The children earn points every time they solve a problem and can move up in levels when certain points are reached.

The students take turns playing a character with the masks while reading the story and solving problems individually.

Another fun thing about the interactive classroom is that the children can write on the screen for everyone to see. It’s also a useful tool for when the tutor needs to show them how to solve problems.

I think the best part for my son about the tutoring sessions is being in a small group. He felt more comfortable and confident to engage with the other kids. The small group allowed them each equal amounts of attention from the tutor. An additional perk, of course, are the points they can earn being on an exciting mission, that can be redeemed for real-world prizes!
