Dance Like No One’s Watching

GreaseOSTIf I didn’t already love Don, his use of scenes from the movie Grease to learn how to dance would have solidified my feelings towards him. We’ve all done it – stood in front of a television re-enacting a dance scene from a movie, and Grease was always my first choice. I wanted to be Sandy after she turned in her poodle skirt for a black unitard and went all rebel. I don’t support changing just for a guy, but for John Travolta (before he began butchering people’s names at awards shows), I was willing to make an exception. There is, however, one part from that dance scene that didn’t quite line up with the one in my bedroom years ago when I belted out You’re the One that I Want – a skeleton.

How Many Uses Are There for a Science Skeleton?

We learned about two this week – practicing dance moves and trying out sexual positions. Both scenes had me laughing out loud. There is an unwritten rule in my house that my children don’t come into the bathroom when the door is closed. They ignore that unwritten rule all the time. I often wonder if going from unwritten to written would make a difference… It wouldn’t.

When the Dean broke the unwritten rule of going into an office when the door was closed, I might suggest to Don that to avoid future embarrassment, he should consider what moms have been doing for years when they need some alone time – just lock the door! The fact that he was able to seamlessly transition into a meeting after being found in such a compromising position with an inanimate object is amazing. I would have left the office, ran out of the building and maybe even picked out a new state to live in. There would be no recovering from that for me, but not our Don. He was just thankful he had decided to keep his clothes on which means getting naked in his office at his place of employment was an option. The Dean can be thankful that good sense prevailed, and he was only willing to practice the sexual positions fully clothed.

When in Doubt, Always Do the Running Man

Something major was required to save the situation… I performed the running man, milking the cow, and the fishing imitation, reeling Bianca in, though she did not actually move as required.

How could she not respond to being reeled in by Don after he broke out the running man and milked the cow? Crazy! Bianca was never right for him, and we all knew it before we even met her. Our thoughts were confirmed when he called Rosie the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. I may have swooned a little, and I am not a swooner. I loved that they danced, and she was unwilling to let Don leave the ball without fixing his embarrassing moment.

What I’m still trying to figure out is if Rosie loves Don. I’ve thought all along that she has fallen for him, even though they are polar opposites, but something she said in the car made me question her motives.

So I have this whole thing about rejection.

Those words make me nervous. I’ve been concerned that Don would break her heart at some point in the story, but what I wasn’t prepared to contemplate was the fact that she might break his. What if she’s just chasing after him because he’s playing his own weird version of hard to get and once he decides he likes her, the chase will no longer be exciting? Don may be able to overcome getting caught in sexual positions with skeletons and being embarrassed on the dance floor, but after opening himself up to a woman, would he be able to handle rejection?

What do you think Book Club members? Is Rosie in this for the right reasons and when will Don realize they are more right for each other than his facts and figures tell him? Did you used to dance to Grease in your bedroom growing up? Do you still dance to it now because, really, how could you not when that song comes on?

  1. I finished the book so I have to keep my comments to myself so I don’t accidentally give away any spoilers. But yes, I did dance to the Grease soundtrack and yes, I still own it – just don’t have a record player to play it anymore. My best friend and I used to dance around the house all the time.

  2. OMG…I am loving this book. Don is hilarious. I think at first Rosie is intrigued by Don’s quirkiness and my hope is that she genuinely falls for him. My tablet just died so I have to wait til tonight to finish the book since my spring break is over. In regards to Grease, I had the album and used red lipstick to put a heart around John Travolta, I am laughing just thinking about that. This may be my only post til the book is finished.
