"Timed

20 days. It only takes twenty days to form a habit. As the JMB team nears that mark in our Timed Exercise fitness challenge, we are starting to settle into the T:E routine. Here are a few things we’ve learned a long the way.

1. Make Time For Your Workout

You know T:E’s workout is only thirty minutes long, but the classes are scheduled. A few of us got worried when we previewed our weekly agendas and realized we only had free time to workout on “off hours.”

A T:E fun fact is as long as a trainer is there, the gym is open! Last week, Megan, Kacey and Shannon all met between regular classes and completed the W.O.D (work-of-the-day) together. The trainer did everything he would at a normal class from reviewing the exercises to pushing them to the finish. Timed exercise will make time for you, gotta love that!

2. Put Your Body First

Naturally some workouts will be tougher than others and may include some exercises that you aren’t able to execute yet. Many people may have reservations about an exercise but go ahead and try their best because that’s what your mama always told you, right? Not so much here. When you are working with real deal weights and strength equipment under time constraints, it is smarter to ask your trainer for help because of the potential for injury.

The whole point of T:E is to increase strength, but you can’t do that if you are hurt. The W.O.D review at the start of the class includes modifications but it happens quickly. Plus, sometimes you don’t know what you can and can’t do until you attempt the first round. When you get to that exercise that gives you trouble, don’t be afraid to put your body first and ask for assistance. These trainers know their stuff and they are more than willing to help.

Remember modifications don’t mean you won’t sweat, push yourself or get stronger…in fact, it will help you improve even faster by using the proper form. To make the most of your workout, communicate with the trainers…the more they know, they more they can help you.

3. Customize Your Exercise

One of the coolest things is to see that anyone can get a kick-a workout at T:E! Most classes have a wide variety of participants. From grandmothers to men that could pass for bodybuilders, we are all pushing our own limits until that clock buzzes. No matter your fitness level, you can challenge yourself.

Many of you are training for The Donna Race to Finish Breast Cancer next month and/or the Gate River Run in March like me. I gotta admit, I wondered if I would be able to handle these workouts with my training schedule. I voiced my concern to my lunch time coach and fellow runner, Eden. I’m so glad I did. She tailored the workout-of-the-day for me with my upcoming race in mind. She recommended I use lighter weights and substituted a leg-heavy exercise for a different arm and abdomonial exercise to ensure I didn’t put too much stress on my legs. Remember cross training is very important for runners and anyone wanting a balanced exercise regime.

Don’t shy away from a workout, tailor it to work for you instead. T:E may be a group class but it is also a personal training session so take advantage of it.
