Now that school is back in session, it’s time to sort out the fall calendar. Keeping your big kids active is as much of a priority as homework and reading time. But, what is a school-aged child to do to stay active and healthy?

With most schools cutting back on physical activity more than ever, it is important to make time to be active when the kids are at home. But, I didn’t want to sign my 7-year-old daughter up for a six month or year long commitment for gymnastics or cheerleading. What if she didn’t like it and we are ‘stuck’ for a year? What if the competitive gym environment isn’t for her? She likes to dance, but does she like it enough to commit to a class, buy the shoes and pay for a recital?

My Gym Jacksonville: The After School Answer for Big Kids!

Like many moms out there, I was stumped. But then I realized- she could dance, learn how to do a cartwheel and exercise, and do it all without investing in expensive uniforms or lengthy classes. And as for shoes, well, she could be barefoot! Where was this magical place? You may be surprised when I tell you all of this can be found at My Gym – Jacksonville.

We set off to try out a few of the classes My Gym offered for ‘big kids’. First, we tried Zumba, for ages 7-11. My daughter loved all 45 minutes of it, and she was definitely working up a sweat! I was impressed how well the My Gym instructor knew the steps and taught the class. She was shaking and grooving all afternoon, and eager to show her Dad her “new moves.” I highly recommend Zumba if your child loves to dance and move their body to the music! (I was jealous- I really wanted to jump in and dance too!).

Next, we visited a Champions class, for ages 6-12 years old. Now this was a workout! The class is high energy with an emphasis on tumbling and gymnastic fundamentals. The class begins with all the students together; then it is broken into two groups that work on a specific skill, such as cartwheels, balance beam, uneven bars and more. Then the students come back together for a teamwork challenge. This is a fantastically well-rounded class. I was surprised that there were as many girls as boys in this class.

My Gym’s answer to childhood obesity is their Cardio Kids class, for ages 7-13. This class is the closest to “what Mommy does” so this was a very exciting option for my daughter. It targets specific muscle groups and combines age-appropriate exercises from circuit training routines. This is an ideal option for those big kids who think they are little adults (you know what I mean)!

I must say how pleasantly surprised I was to realize that My Gym offered so many options for school-aged kids, which were so much more inexpensive than the alternatives. They aren’t just a fantastic place for birthday parties! (But we all know how awesome their birthday parties are–just ask my daughter!)
