Drowning is a major cause of accidental death for young children and can occur in just centimeters of water. However, drowning is not the only risk; many of the different water activities families choose come with their own opportunities for disaster. That’s why water safety is so important.<\/p>\n

On average there are ten deaths per day from unintentional drownings in the United States. One in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. Dr. Miren Schinco, Trauma Medical Director at Orange Park Medical Center shares these tips to keep your family safe wherever you choose to make a splash this summer.<\/p>\n

Summer is soon approaching, and living in the “Sunshine State” means that swimming is a year-round option for us. Having your child (or even yourself) as prepared as possible with swim lessons from trained instructors is key to ensuring water safety. At Swim Lesson Suzi you or your child will learn from someone who is experienced and passionate about teaching swimming. Suzi Teitelman has been teaching swim since she was 15 years old, and always dreamed of being an instructor right in her own backyard. In 2011, she made that dream come true in her Jacksonville Beach home, with a custom-designed pool for instructing her students. She has been teaching Red Cross Swimming for 25 years. Not only is Suzi passionate, but she is fun, efficient, and fast. She will teach you and\/or your child the basics of swimming, proper stroke techniques and how to save yourself with water safety. Suzi offers a package of eight lessons lasting 30 minutes each, for $400, and you can add a child for only $250 more. The Bolles School<\/a><\/h3>\n

Swim Lessons with The Bolles School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Bolles School has several swimming instruction opportunities beginning this spring. The Learn to Swim course is March 4-27 and is located on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus. This group introduces swimming to young children and does so in a safe, controlled environment with a small swimmer-to-coach ratio. The instructor will remain in the water at all times to provide a fun and safe atmosphere.\u00a0The cost of the session is $185 and includes insurance and deposit fees. The group meets at the pool on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. or from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m<\/p>\n

The JR Makos Spring Session, which runs March 5 through April 18. This course is an introduction to competitive swimming program and is located on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus. Designed for children ages five and up, the class has two sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One is from 4:15 to 5 p.m. and the other is from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Swimmers in this class will learn all four strokes and must be able to kick 25 yards and swim 15 yards with their face in the water to participate. Each class is limited to six participants.
