When it’s your child and it’s an emergency, what matters most is experience. Many parents in our area have turned to the Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center in Jacksonville for years, seeking the expertise and peace of mind only a children’s hospital can provide.
A year ago, Wolfson Children’s Hospital opened its second Emergency Center at the Baptist Clay Medical Campus in Fleming Island. With this, we are bringing Wolfson Children’s Hospital to Clay County kids and other nearby communities. From croup and broken bones to an asthma attack or seizure, our children’s ERs are the best choice for kids.
Specializing in Kids
Our pediatric ER physicians have completed a three-year residency in pediatrics or emergency medicine, with additional fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine or pediatric critical care.
We believe that a true pediatric ER should be staffed by pediatric emergency medicine physicians who are dedicated to kids of all ages, from infants to teens. Because of our intense training in both pediatric and emergency medicine, we can recognize the nuances of a child’s condition and provide the care he or she needs quickly and appropriately. – Anthony Pohlgeers, MD, with the Wolfson Children’s ERs in Jacksonville and at Clay.
Not only do the physicians at both Wolfson Children’s ERs have expertise in treating kids in urgent or emergency situations, but they also specialize in taking care of kids with special needs.
“When a child has a serious illness or is dependent on medical technology like a ventilator or feeding tube, parents really want an ER backed by a children’s hospital,” explained Dr. Pohlgeers, a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physician. “We provide that care at our ERs in Jacksonville and Clay County.”

Matthew Locklair, MD, also a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physician at the Wolfson ERs in Jacksonville and at Clay, said, “Only a small percentage of children who come to our ERs need to be hospitalized, but if they do need inpatient or specialty care, we can transition them quickly and seamlessly to Wolfson Children’s Hospital. We work daily with the pediatric specialty physicians at Wolfson and can make sure kids get directly to the care they need.”
He added, “Our Kids Kare ICU transport team is comprised of pediatric critical care professionals who can help stabilize the child on his way to Wolfson Children’s Hospital from our Children’s ER or any local ER. We have a helipad at Baptist Clay if air transport is required.”
Dr. Pohlgeers said, “Although our environment is kid-friendly, it isn’t just about soothing colors, art and toys in our rooms. It’s about the people who are taking care of your child. We have unique experience and the expertise because what we do is take care of kids. We are an extension of Wolfson Children’s Hospital.”
“It’s not just because I do this for a living that I say I wouldn’t want any child I love to go anyplace but a pediatric ER in an emergency,” said Dr. Locklair. “Parents and grandparents can have peace of mind knowing we are backed by the region’s only children’s hospital. That’s what makes our Wolfson Children’s ERs different.”
