The Enduring Mystery of Nancy Guthrie: A Former Reporter’s Obsession

As a former news reporter, I’ve covered my share of heartbreak, hope, and headlines. Even though I’ve been out of the news business for nearly 20 years, some stories still captivate me. In recent years, it’s been mass shootings, hurricanes and natural disasters, the Menendez Brothers story, and the shootings of the UnitedHealthcare CEO and Charlie Kirk, to name a few.

But few stories have ever gripped me — or the public consciousness — like the ongoing disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC News’ TODAY show. I can’t help but be obsessed with the twists and turns of this baffling case, and at the same time, heartbroken for the Guthrie family.

In the early days of the search, I was losing sleep over feeling terrible for the Guthrie family, and trying to stay informed all hours of the day and night. I would wake up in the middle of the night to search my favorite media outlets — hoping for good news. Before TMZ became so prominent in this story after receiving alleged ransom letters and potentially direct contact from someone who claims to know the kidnapper’s identity, I often checked TMZ.com for other breaking news. Somehow, they seem to break a lot of news first — and now they are right smack in the center of this investigation.

I also refer to Page Six and Perez Hilton for more obscure details and stick to NBC News, knowing they are an extension of the family. If I’m being honest, I am checking multiple outlets at least a few times every hour — even when I should be working and sleeping.

Here we are, more than two weeks into the search for Savannah’s beloved mom, and the facts we know are frustratingly scant: Nancy vanished without a trace, leaving behind a wake of confusion and concern. Each time I revisit the details, I find myself caught between the hope that a new clue will surface and the maddening reality that we may never know what truly happened.

When they released the video of a person lurking outside her front door, I thought to myself… that’s it! This is the break they needed, and it won’t take long for someone to identify them. Nope! I think the suspect’s bizarre behavior just confused the police (and most of us) even more.

Then another video surfaced, taken a few miles away of someone else appearing to break into someone’s locked gate. Then they take someone into custody for questioning, only to release them later. So many hopeful moments, yet so few answers.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this case is how it’s captivated not just law enforcement, but also the media and armchair sleuths alike. I admit, I’m right there with them: combing through timelines, analyzing interviews, and questioning every new development. Social media platforms buzz with theories (some more realistic than others), and online forums dissect every piece of information. It’s easy to go down that rabbit hole, which often leaves me questioning what’s fact from fiction.

While I may have stepped away from the daily news grind, my mom and reporter’s heart can’t let go — not until Nancy’s story finds an ending. For now, I’ll keep following the updates, scouring news outlets, and hoping (along with everyone else) that the next development will finally bring the closure we all seek — hopefully one with a happy ending.

Bring her home.

Boy mom. Household CEO. Corporate leader. Outdoor lover. Social seeker. Sun worshipper. Curious traveler. Champagne enthusiast. These words describe me, Kerry Schicker, and contributor for Jacksonville Mom. I first approached founders Vicky and Megan after a heartbreaking miscarriage a few years ago. I had a very unpleasant experience with my OB at the time and I needed to get it off my chest so I wrote an anonymous blog that resonated with some of our readers. I have since written dozens of blogs mostly about motherhood. I have a passion for writing. My 20-year career has grown through some form of writing including TV news reporting and producing, magazine publishing, public relations, advertising, marketing, blogging and my current day job doing HR and employee communications for a Fortune 300 FinTech company. I am thankful that Jacksonville has such a supportive community for moms like me, and I can't imagine raising my two boys anywhere else.
