From the Green Screen to Family Scenes: Embracing Sunshine Beyond the Studio

green screenFor years, my mornings began well before the first light of dawn. I was up at the crack of 2 a.m. (yep, you read that right), armed with several cups of coffee and weather maps, ready to tackle the day’s forecast. Becoming Jacksonville’s weekday morning meteorologist was a dream come true — one that I’ll always cherish. But as much as I loved tracking the weather, a new adventure was calling my name: full-time motherhood.

When I decided to transition from the studio to staying at home with my babies (for now, at least, while I hit the reset button and re-prioritize), it wasn’t about leaving one dream behind but embracing another. My little ones went from full-time daycare to finally waking up with their mama every morning, so we’re all adjusting to this new routine together. It’s a shift, for sure, but one that’s filled with so much joy and discovery.

Finding Our New Rhythm

Life’s forecast has certainly changed, and while toddlerhood can be chaotic at times, we’re in a season of finding our new rhythm. Gone are the early alarms and live broadcasts, replaced by mornings of cartoons, cuddle sessions, and breakfast without a time crunch. We’re figuring it out as we go, and every day isn’t perfectly planned, but it’s perfectly ours and I’m soaking in every moment.

In Florida, the weather is always an adventure, just like our daily routines. Whether we’re exploring the beach, hitting a local park, or just making the most of our backyard on the playset or jumping through the sprinklers, I remind myself each day that this truly feels like a mini vacation. There’s something magical about the simple moments, where worries melt away like fog on a sunny morning, leaving just the sound of the trees swaying and the laughter of my kids.

One thing I’ve learned is that work will always be there if, when, and in what capacity I choose to return. I’m grateful for the career I had and know the door is always open. I’m grateful for my husband who’s willing and able to provide for all of us, plus it’s nice to save on the childcare bills. For now, my focus is on being present with my children and making the most of every day. This chapter of life is fulfilling in its own way, even though it’s much different from my newsroom days.

The Learning Curve

Of course, not every day is clear skies and sunshine. Just like in meteorology, there’s a learning curve to this stay-at-home mom role. Some days are filled with unpredictable showers of chaos, and that’s okay. I have a 2-year-old son and an almost 4-year-old daughter. My husband and I are in the thick of it. I mean it when I say there’s beauty in the messiness and the unscheduled moments. Sometimes, it’s the spontaneous living room dance parties or front porch picnics that become the most cherished memories.

Adjusting from full-time daycare to being home with Mommy has been a transition for all of us. We’re finding our groove, discovering new routines, and creating our own special traditions like making breakfast together followed by “puzzle tiiime!” and neighborhood walks. It’s a process, and we’re navigating it with a mix of patience and humor.

Embracing Everyday Moments

Our days are filled with simple joys — from building forts to arts and crafts, and even some weather science experiments! I’m learning more than ever that the little things, like seeing the world through my children’s eyes and watching them grow, are really the big things. These moments are my dream come true, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

I’m appreciating the chance to slow down and be fully present. I mean, have you ever tried getting out of the house with two very strong-willed, independent toddlers? Yes, we’ll likely be 15 minutes late to nearly everything. Ha!

In my previous role, the pace was fast, deadlines were no joke (the show started at 4:30 a.m. sharp whether you were mic’d up or not!), and the demands were high. Now, I have the luxury of time — time to fully enjoy my kids without feeling terribly sleep-deprived or worrying about the clock, answering their endless questions, and savoring each moment. I’m not rushing through the day, but taking it one moment at a time, knowing this season is fleeting. *happy tears*

The Journey Continues

My decision to move on from the local television world is an entirely separate blog post — or deeper conversation — I’ve kept close to my heart. It’s a complex journey deserving of its own space to explore, and maybe one day if I feel brave enough. For now, I’m focused on the joy of being fully present with my kiddos and husband and embracing this new role with all the highs and lows. Such is life, right?!

To all the moms navigating their own transitions, remember: It’s okay to take it one day at a time. Whether you’re adjusting to life at home or juggling work and family, we’re all in this together. And if you ever want to chat about the forecast — or just need another mom pal to connect with — I’m here!
