Women Are Scary: Meeting Your Mom Bestie

Just like Melanie Dale, the author of Women are Scary, I seemed to relate more to boys than girls growing up. Girls (like women) are scary- with their complicated emotions and snarky comments. When my husband and I first started dating, he was baffled that I didn’t have a harem of girlfriends. I flatly explained that I thought girls were jerks, as well as unpredictable and unreliable. Skip ahead a few years, and I am surrounded by women again- at the kid’s school, sports practices, PTA meetings- they are everywhere!

Well, I might as well be back in high school, except now these moms and I have at least one thing in common- the bond of motherhood. And sadly, at 36 years old, I still have no idea how to make a mom-friend.

Women Are ScaryIn Women Are Scary, Melanie Dale humorously and honestly explores the scary, unpredictable and often daunting task of making mom friends. I found myself loving this book from the very first sentence- which just happened to be a movie quote from the Adam Sandler film, “Billy Madison.”

She speaks candidly about her struggles to become a mother and her experience with adoption. It is brutally honest and often painful- yet completely relatable. She tells the reader, step by step, how to make and keep mom friends. She calls this process “Mom Dating” and takes us step by step, starting with first base (the Mom Date Virgin) through fourth base (the Ultimate Mom Friend).

The author includes a list of conversation starting questions to ask the mom a few chairs down from you at your child’s soccer game. She also mentions how to begin a convo with a fellow mom while waiting in the preschool pickup line. If you two hit it off, then maybe it is time to move on to second base- a kid date at an agreed upon location, such as a neighborhood park or pool. If every goes well, third base is a playdate at your home. (Personally I think this is a scariest of all the ‘bases’!) Fourth base doesn’t happen easily or to every momlationship- but those fourth basers, as Melanie calls them, become lifelong friends. These are the women you spend time with, without your children in tow.

But this book doesn’t leave it at that. The author does a wonderful and very thorough job of navigating the waters of momlationships, in a very humorous yet practical way. She tells of her own judging of women and the mistakes she has made in this very complicated relationship territory.  I especially enjoyed the chapter on how to identify different mom types, and how we all can relate to them. Her final chapters are about how to break up with mom friends. I don’t think I have ever seen this topic explained so plainly and humorously.

At 229 pages, Women Are Scary is probably the shortest reference book you will ever read. I call it a reference book because it is definitely a book you don’t read once and put on the shelf. I have already looked back at topics to see what advice she gave. And I love love love the quote from one of the first chapters of the book, “If we can learn how to develop real-soul soothing relationships, there’s no stopping what we can do together for our kids, our families, and the world.” Amen, Melanie! I couldn’t agree more. Thank you so much for writing us mommas a how-to guide to make it happen.
