Serving With Love: My Journey of Feeding the Homeless in Jacksonville

My passion for helping others began at a young age. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom in the Philippines. She would buy food for homeless children and, without hesitation, sit on the concrete in the middle of a crowded, dirty street to hand-feed them. I remember children swarming us to try and get a bite. Watching my mom’s selflessness and her willingness to sit on the ground, eye-level with hungry, malnourished kids, was deeply influential. She showed me that compassion isn’t something you talk about; it’s something you live through action.

That lesson carried me into my teenage years. In high school, every year on my birthday, I made care packages for the homeless in Washington, D.C. My birthday fell in the middle of winter, and winters there are brutal, so I organized blanket drives at school and, with my family’s help, handed out care packages and blankets around the city at night. Those birthday traditions taught me that the best way to celebrate life is by giving back.

Later in life, while I was struggling in college studying cybersecurity, I made a promise to God — or the Universe — that if I ever landed my dream job, I would return that blessing back to the world. Fast forward to the weekend before I officially started my dream job in cybersecurity: I filmed my first TikTok video of preparing breakfast for the homeless. It was my way of saying, “See, I’m keeping my word. Thank you for this blessing.” What began as a promise has since become one of the most meaningful parts of my life.

Cooking with Care

From the start, I promised myself I would only cook meals I’d serve my husband. That might sound simple, but it’s everything to me. If I wouldn’t feed it to the person I love most, it doesn’t belong in the hands of someone who deserves nourishment and dignity. When I prepare meals for the homeless, I make sure the meals carry the same love, care, and thoughtfulness that I put into cooking for my husband.

To me, food is more than calories. Food is intimate. It’s a reminder that someone sees you, cares for you, and wants you to feel valued. Every meal I prepare carries the same love and care that goes into my own family’s table.

More Than Just a Meal

What I deliver is never just about food. It’s connection, kindness, and dignity. Some of the most meaningful moments come in those few minutes of hand-delivering breakfast… sharing a smile, a short conversation, or simply eye contact that says, “You are not invisible.”

Getting to know the people I serve has become one of my favorite parts of this mission. Their stories of struggles and resilience humble me every time. I’ve learned that at the heart of it, we’re not so different.

A Mother’s Lesson

Looking back, I see clearly how much my own mother shaped me. The image of her hand-feeding children in the streets of the Philippines is one I will never forget. She didn’t shield me from those moments, but instead, she showed me that true compassion is messy, uncomfortable, and real. That experience planted the seed that has now grown into my work here in Jacksonville.

And that’s what I’d encourage moms reading this to remember: Your children are always watching. The lessons they learn from you, whether it’s organizing a blanket drive, cooking extra food for someone in need, or simply showing kindness, will stay with them forever. As moms, you have the power to raise the next generation of changemakers by modeling love in action.

My dream is that this effort doesn’t just stop with me. By sharing my story, I hope others feel encouraged to take part in helping our neighbors, in whatever way makes sense for them. Whether it’s cooking a meal, donating essentials, or simply offering kindness, small actions ripple outward.

This mission is not just about food. It’s about dignity, compassion, and love. It’s about reminding people that they matter. My hope is that this work continues to grow, not just in the meals served, but in the love shared.
