International Yoga Day: How Yoga Has Changed My Life + FREE Yoga!

international yoga dayEvery year on June 21st, people around the world come together to celebrate International Yoga Day, a global recognition of one of humanity’s most enduring wellness traditions. Yoga is a 5,000-year-old discipline that originated in ancient India. The word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to unite” or “to join” — symbolizing the union of mind, body, and spirit. Originally a philosophical and spiritual practice, yoga was designed to prepare the body and mind for deeper meditation and self-awareness. Over centuries, it has evolved into various forms and schools, from the gentle flow of Hatha to the intensity of Ashtanga, and now includes a variety of modern adaptations suitable for all ages and abilities — I’ve even done goat yoga!

Why Yoga?

I’ve been practicing yoga for over 10 years, and I first started going to yoga classes primarily for fitness and to maintain my figure. What I didn’t realize was how it would turn out to be so much more than a workout and the amazing impact it would have on my life. I work in a very stressful environment, am trying to raise two children to be decent human beings, be a supportive wife to my husband, and keep my house running.  I think we can all agree that mom-ing can be A LOT, and sometimes it feels like there is no rest in sight.

Yoga is the most incredible outlet and reset for me. I look forward to going to class and will do everything in my power to arrange my schedule so I can make it to a yoga class whether in the morning or at night. I have no science background, but the shift is more than just the endorphins or adrenaline rush you get from a typical workout. My practice has advanced over the years, and I am so proud each time I master a new pose or take it to the next level. It’s a gift that keeps on giving and is constantly reminding me that I can do hard things! After every class, I walk out sweaty and accomplished and ready to tackle the next thing on my to-do list.

The yoga community is like no other. Walk into a yoga studio, and you will instantly feel at home. Not only are yogis supportive of each other, but they also support the local community by giving back to local events and offering free yoga classes and more! There are so many different types of yoga and so many modification options that truly everyone can partake in this practice.

The Benefits of Practicing Yoga

While yoga’s spiritual roots remain, science has validated its many physical and mental benefits. Here’s how this ancient practice can transform modern lives:

Improved Flexibility and Strength: Consistent yoga practice helps stretch and tone the muscles. Many poses build strength in often-overlooked muscle groups, improving balance, posture, and joint health. Any movement is good for the body!

Reduced Stress and Anxiety: One of yoga’s most powerful tools is breathwork, or pranayama. Coupled with meditative movement, yoga helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system — your body’s natural “rest and digest” mode — leading to a calming of the mind and relief from daily stressors.

Better Sleep: Studies have shown that those who practice yoga regularly fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. The combination of physical exertion, mental relaxation, and intentional breathing promotes deeper rest.

Supports Heart and Immune Health: Yoga can lower blood pressure, improve circulation, and even boost the immune system by reducing inflammation and supporting hormonal balance. It encourages mindfulness, which leads to healthier choices in diet and lifestyle.

Fosters Mental Clarity and Emotional Stability: Beyond physical health, yoga invites introspection. By creating space for stillness and mindfulness, it helps develop emotional resilience, enhances concentration, and nurtures a more centered perspective on life.
