The Top 5 Illnesses We’re Seeing in Kids Right Now — and How We Help Families Decide What to Do Next

Thank you to Bluebird Kids Health for sponsoring this post and providing pediatric care to families throughout Northeast Florida.

As so many parents know, the months of January and February bring more sniffles, coughs, and sick days than usual — something we’re seeing every day in our office right now. Cooler mornings, holiday gatherings, travel, and kids being together at school create the perfect environment for germs to spread.

One of the most common questions parents ask us at Bluebird Kids Health is, “Is this something I can manage at home, or should I call the doctor?” It’s a reasonable question — and one we’re always happy to talk through.

Here’s what we’re seeing most often right now, and how we help guide families through next steps.

Colds

Runny noses, congestion, coughs, and low energy are everywhere this month. From a medical standpoint, most colds are mild and improve with rest, fluids, and comfort care at home.

We recommend checking in if symptoms last more than a week, your child develops a fever, breathing seems more difficult, or something just doesn’t feel right. Parents know their kids best — and we take those instincts seriously.

Flu

Flu is widespread right now, and we’re seeing many children come in with sudden fevers, body aches, fatigue, cough, and sore throat.

If you think your child may have the flu, it’s worth calling us early so we can help you decide what to do next. In some cases, treatment may help shorten symptoms, and we can also walk you through what to expect and when it’s important to be seen.

Stomach Bugs

This time of year often brings an uptick in stomach viruses, especially after holiday travel and school breaks. Vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain are common and usually improve within a few days.

Hydration is key. We want to hear from you if your child isn’t keeping fluids down, has signs of dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that aren’t improving. Sometimes reassurance is enough — and sometimes it helps to take a closer look.

Ear Infections

Colds and congestion can lead to ear pain this time of year. Some ear infections resolve on their own, while others benefit from treatment.

If your child has ongoing ear pain, fever, drainage, or trouble sleeping, we’re happy to take a look and help you decide together what makes the most sense.

Sore Throats

Sore throats are common during the winter months. While many are viral, strep throat is still circulating.

If your child has a sore throat with fever, swollen glands, or symptoms that aren’t improving after a few days, give us a call so we can help determine whether testing or treatment is needed.

We Always Want to Hear From You

This time of year, it’s normal for kids to be a little run down — and it’s also normal for parents to feel unsure about what’s “normal” and what’s not. If you’re unsure what to do, that’s your cue to reach out and book an appointment.

You don’t need to diagnose anything before calling us. Our role is to listen carefully, ask the right questions, and help you decide whether your child can recover comfortably at home, needs a same-day visit, or needs more urgent care.

Even if we don’t get a true winter down here, germs don’t take a break. And when you need guidance, we’re here to help you navigate the season with confidence.
