Master Spring Cleaning with the ‘New School Laundry’ Routine

Thank you to Gain at Walmart for helping me with these "new school" laundry tips. All opinions are my own.

Ahhh, laundry. It never stops and most of us are stuck in a laundry rut. A seemingly endless spin-cycle of pre-treaters, liquid detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets… it never ends. And when it does end, sometimes the clothes that we just washed and dried don’t feel, look or smell clean. Let’s stop wasting time with too many products that just don’t deliver. It’s time to switch up our worn-out routine and try a new approach. We are calling it “New School Laundry.”

Gain has a fresh, new regimen for cleaning and drying clothes, and it all starts with their super-convenient Gain Flings. I love the name — because you basically just “fling” them in the tub of your washer, add clothes and that’s it! They contain not only sweet-smelling Gain detergent, but also Oxi-boost (for those pesky kid stains) and Febreeze — which we all know and love. My time is valuable (as is most moms) so the less I have to measure and pour, the better.

Gain Flings are compatible with both standard and high-efficiency machines and are designed to dissolve in any water temperature, meaning you can save money and extend the life of your clothes by using cold water rather than warm with each load — which I love! Products like this have really helped put a new school spin on the age-old task of doing laundry and are making the process more efficient and better for me and my family.

Okay, got it. Flings get clothes clean, but what about when I want my towels and sheets to be extra soft and smelling great? Of course, Gain Flings can get your towels and sheets clean, just like they do for clothes. But what I like most about the #NewSchoolLaundry routine is the Gain Fireworks Scent Booster & Fabric Softener! My sheets and towels smell AMAZING and are incredibly soft. The Fireworks Scent Booster is a container of beads that dissolve in your washing machine when added in with your detergent. Use a little or a lot — you control the scent boost for your laundry load! It is safe to use on all colors and fabrics, making it a perfect addition to this new way to clean (and deodorize) clothes. I especially love using the Fireworks Scent Booster on beach towels and swimsuits. Another fantastic use for the Fabric Softener is for your kids’ carseats! The scent lasts extra long, so instead of a car that smells like warm sippy cups, it smells like a fresh load of laundry. SCORE!

We all know how great Gain Dryer Sheets work. Not only do they complete the laundry regimen by controlling static and preventing wrinkles, but they also soften and freshen clothes in the dryer.

My family is thrilled about our switch to #NewSchoolLaundry. Things I have actually heard in my house since using these Gain products: “Mom! I just want to lay in these clean towels — they smell so good!” From my hubby: “I hope you are going to wash the clothes like this all the time!”

To get your #NewSchoolLaundry off to the right start, here are a few tips you probably didn’t know about washing and drying your clothes:

• Contrary to popular belief, towels don’t have to be washed alone. They can mingle in the wash with any other cotton clothes.

• Gym clothes with lycra or spandex, however, do need to be washed alone. Throwing them in with other clothes can cause breakdowns in the fabric and destroy antimicrobial and moisture-wicking qualities.

• If your clothes shrink in the dryer, soak them in water with a few tablespoons of hair conditioner for a few minutes and gently stretch the fibers back out.

• Save yourself the time spent on ironing by hanging wrinkled clothes in the bathroom before a hot shower, or toss them in the dryer with a Gain fabric softener sheet and a wet sock for a few minutes to remove the wrinkles and static while giving your clothes a great scent.

• When you put your laundry away in your drawers after folding, file your clothes from the front of the drawer to back rather than stacking them. This will save time when you’re looking for your next outfit and will prevent you from having to dig through and then possibly re-fold any laundry you displace in your search for the perfect T-shirt.

• Some detergents are not compatible with today’s high-efficiency machines and can cause harmful buildup and damage to the machine if used over time, so be sure to check the label before buying. Gain Flings are safe for all machines.
