JMB Top 10!
“Working moms have two jobs — the one that pays them, and the one they love more than life. And there are so many times these two jobs are at odds with each other, are pitted against each other, suck time and energy from each other, and pull a working mom in too many directions when she has no give left to give.”
“One day, while I was at a school, a pretty awful thing happened. A mom I had just met began to size up and down the look and actions of a teacher. I was shocked; this kind of thing just doesn’t and shouldn’t happen in adulthood. It was inappropriate, and it was about to get downright offensive.”
“We were at a loss. He asked me many times to go to therapy, and I refused. I had been once back in my single days, and I thought it was a joke. He started going without me and then the ultimatum came… go or I go.”
“The number one question people always have whenever we’ve announced a new pregnancy is, “Was it planned?” I hate that question — does it make a difference? Is it any of your business? But in the interest of honesty, I’ll answer it this time. No, it wasn’t planned. It also wasn’t unplanned.”
“I’d say my parenting style is riiiiight in the middle of helicopter mom and hands-off mom. My girlfriend calls it “drone parenting” — where we can hover from afar, but swoop in when needed. It’s worked great for me for the past eight years. I don’t feel the need to be hovering over my kids, watching their every move to make sure they don’t get hurt. I also don’t feel the desire to have them out of my sight for extended periods of time, even while at the park.”
“Have you been unfriended on Facebook? Did you ask the person why they unfriended you, or did you just move on? I’ve been unfriended before. and I didn’t ask. It’s not that I didn’t want to know. ”
“I didn’t realize our son was “different” until he was in preschool. Because he was our only child, I had nothing to compare his behavior to as I wasn’t an experienced mother. I rarely babysat growing up. He was considered a very active child, climbing on everything, not able to stay seated at meal times or in his chair at school… or anywhere.”
“When our now 4-year-old son Landon was two-and-a-half years old, we took him on a special one last hurrah! trip before our second boy was born. He was a little young to know what was going on, but my husband and I were excited to watch his eyes light up through the magic of Disney World. Our trip had some positive times but also had its share of challenges.”
“But still, packing away the tiny baby clothes was not an easy thing to do — it was a little heartbreaking and so very bittersweet. I almost didn’t do it. Then I looked at the small, 1930s-era closet, which has to fit all of the clothes for twins, and I realized I need to let go.”
“I think we might have made a mistake,” I whispered conspiratorially to my husband as we lay side by side in the dark, mindlessly playing on our respective smartphones, while our 3-week-old son, Archer, grunted and snorted and whistled just two feet away in his bassinet. “Yeah. This sucks,” he whispered back.”
