St. Nicholas Playground is located adjacent to Spring Park Road in the St. Nicholas/Spring Park section of Jacksonville. Following City land purchases in 1936 and 1937, the park was created and originally named Spring Park, and was expanded by additional land acquisitions in 1944. The St. Nicholas Park and Home Park subdivisions were developed near the park in the late 1930’s to meet the housing needs of Jacksonville’s growing middle class, and the Spring Park Elementary School opened adjacent to the park in 1942. In recent years the Spring Park Neighborhood Association and St. Nicholas Area Preservation have taken an active role in the maintenance and welfare of the facility, which contains a walking/jogging trail completed in 1999.

Chuck Rogers Park is located in Mandarin, north of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and Orange Picker Rd. Sometime between 1968-1977, a borrow pit was excavated on part of the site, which was later used as a private landfill. The efforts of the City, Councilman Dick Kravitz, and the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club led to the purchase of the site in 1995 and its development as Mandarin’s first soccer park, which opened for the inaugural game March 7, 1997. An additional 1.1-acre parcel for the park was donated to the City in 1998. The park is named for Chuck Rogers (1909-1980), who worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. for 41 years. He started and ran the City’s youth leagues in all sports, was the guiding light in the tremendous rise of slow-pitch softball in the City, served for many years as the grand marshal for the City’s parades, and much more. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

Our Jacksonville Childcare And Preschool Learning Center Programs Are The Best
Located in Jacksonville’s Southside, our childcare programs incorporate creative play, song and dance, planned activities, arts and crafts, and daily outside play activities. We provide childcare for children ages six weeks through five years old.

Our Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program is available to children age four with a birthday on-or-before September 1st of each school year. Our Jacksonville Summer VPK program is for children age 4 with a birthday after September 1st. Children ages five and seven love our Summer Camp.

Timuquana Park is located in the Timuquana Manor neighborhood of southwest Jacksonville, just east of bustling Roosevelt Boulevard. The community was platted in 1942, mostly to provide housing for personnel at the nearby Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The plat dedicates the park property to public use. The name Timuquana derives from the native Indians, the Timuquas, who were living in the area when the first Europeans arrived in the sixteenth century. In 2003, the Timuquana Manor area has established one of the most successful Neighborhood Watch Programs (for crime) in Jacksonville. City officials highly praised Mrs. Alice Turknett, a resident who lives near the park, for her leadership in the program.

In order to join the Pawsitive Reading program, children AND at least one parent/guardian must first attend a one-time Pawsitive Reading orientation. We offer several orientations each month. Upcoming orientation dates and sign-up links are below. Advance registration is required.

Please note: We are unable to offer Pawsitive Reading orientations in June and July due to JHS Summer Camp.

Orientations will take place in either the JHS Education Center or Conference Room (both are located upstairs, above the Adoption Center). Our address is 8464 Beach Blvd. Please arrive on time. The orientation will be around 40 minutes in length.

After attending an orientation, children and an adult chaperone may come to JHS to read to the animals anytime our Adoption Center is open (12pm-7pm on weekdays, 10am-5pm on weekends). Participants must sign in and out at the front desk when visiting JHS to read.

To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Children may read to either dogs or cats and may bring their reading materials or borrow books from our Pawsitive Reading library.

Participants will receive a free book courtesy of The Jim Moran Foundation while supplies are available.

Angelina Danese Park is located in south Jacksonville, at the intersection of Danese Court and St. Augustine Road. The site comprised part of the Philips community that was established in the last half of the 1800’s. Alexander and Angelina Danese, who arrived in America as immigrants from Italy in 1885, had twelve children following their marriage in 1898. The couple established their home on the park property in 1929, and after their deaths the children wanted to honor their parents’ memory. Their son Emanuel Danese, and his wife Mary Margaret, later donated the property to the city in 1973 for use as a passive public park – in honor of his parents and with the stipulation that it be named for his mother. But the site remained a vacant tract until the city, with the aid of City Councilmen Matt Carlucci and Reggie Fullwood, developed the property as a neighborhood park, which opened in March 2003.

The Swim Lesson Club indoor heated pool is located in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. Our pool is heated 92 degrees and perfectly designed for teaching all ages of swimming instruction.

We utilize endless swimming technology allowing us to easily correct technique and achieve excellent swimming conditioning for our developing swimmers. We offer videographer and stroke analysis that is very difficult to accomplish in a normal lap swimming pool. We partner with Swim Angelfish and utilize a special methodology ideal for children with water anxiety, sensory sensitivity, autism, or in need of adapted swimming instruction.

We partner with US Masters Swimming to provide top-notch swim coaching for our developing and advanced swimmers. Our adult students benefit from our partnership with US Masters Swimming and the Emperor Penguin adult learn to swim program/ self-teaching method.

Instructors are certified Lifeguards and often Red Cross WSI certified. The Swim Lesson Club instructor mentoring process allows good instructors to become amazing working directly with the owner for weeks or months before they will teach classes independently. Our instructors are the best and achieve consistent progress with their students. We are not satisfied for our students to stagnate in lessons, our team will collaborate to adjust strategies for each student to achieve results in a fun way. We specialize in private or semi-private classes to focus our attention on each student’s unique learning process.

At Little Seals Swim School, we offer one-on-one survival swim lessons to children as young as 8 months old. Babies/infants are taught to roll over and float on their backs. Once they reach a year old (or have been walking for about 6 weeks), they are taught to swim with their face in the water. The children are then taught to sequence the swimming with the floating in order to rest and breathe while swimming and playing in the water. They repeat the swim-float-swim sequence until they reach the steps or side. Once children are fully skilled, they have the opportunity to practice their skills fully clothed for “Silly Swim” lessons. Once lessons are completed, students are encouraged to maintain their skills by attending twice-monthly maintenance lessons (or semi-annual refresher lessons). Introduction to stroke lessons are, also, available for children that are developmentally ready (usually beginning between 4 and 6 years of age). Instructors are trained to present stroke lessons in a fun way that is relatable to young children.

The Ortega Hills Playground is located in the Ortega Hills area across from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The name Ortega derives from Joseph de Ortega, a judge during the second Spanish occupation of Florida from 1783-1821. In 1804, when John McIntosh bought the plantation that is present-day Ortega, he named it for the judge who facilitated his purchase of the property. Development of Ortega Hills began in 1954, and Devco Inc. donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1959. In recent years the local Community Association, led by its tireless founder Charles Zilla, lobbied for a new park that resulted in a major renovation in 2001. Park usage then increased dramatically, as people rushed to use the new facilities, which included landscaping and a walking/jogging trail around the perimeter.

St. Nicholas Playground is located adjacent to Spring Park Road in the St. Nicholas/Spring Park section of Jacksonville. Following City land purchases in 1936 and 1937, the park was created and originally named Spring Park, and was expanded by additional land acquisitions in 1944. Ringhaver Park is located in southwest Jacksonville, extending south from 118th Street, along the western border of the Ortega River. The City acquired the land comprising the park in 1971, 1972, 1996, and 2000. The park is named for Lambert C. Ringhaver (1910-1976), whose family made a memorial donation for the initial park development, which has grown from 36 acres in 1977 to 576 acres in 2003. Mr. Ringhaver was the founder of Ring Power Corp., and served as president of the Florida Forestry Association, as a trustee of Jacksonville University, and as president of the Greater Jacksonville Open for two terms. The multi-use park is home to the Westside Soccer Club and the Ortega Stream Valley nature area, which contains an 826-foot boardwalk along the Ortega River and a pier that may be used for launching kayaks and canoes.

In February 2003, the park received a new playscape, swing set and benches. In August of 2007 new renovations were completed to the Concession and Restroom Facility Building.
