The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Kent’s U-Pick Fresh Blueberry Farm uses no pesticides on the blueberry bushes. Reservations required. Listed on Facebook. They try to estimate how plentiful the berries will be to accommodate and if weather permits. The season usually lasts six weeks. Mid-May to end of June. During blueberry season, the blueberries do not ripen all at the same time. There are no restroom facilities. Normally schedule Wednesday or Saturday from 7:30 to 12 noon for picking. If the schedule is not on Facebook, call to see what days are open and to make reservations.

Directions: Blueberry field is located at the end of Thomas Mill Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Starting at Lem Turner Road and Highway I – 295, head out north on Lem Turner Road (SR-115) toward Callahan, and go 3.5 miles to Braddock Road. Turn left onto Braddock Road, go one block, and turn left onto Thomas Mill Road (the first part is short and paved). Continue straight onto the dirt part a short distance and look for the windmill. Turn right at the windmill for the entrance and parking. The parking area can accommodate 30 vehicles at a time. To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Program Offered:

Lone Star is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the four-hour session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits as his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

Chuck Rogers Park is located in Mandarin, north of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and Orange Picker Rd. Sometime between 1968-1977, a borrow pit was excavated on part of the site, which was later used as a private landfill. The efforts of the City, Councilman Dick Kravitz, and the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club led to the purchase of the site in 1995 and its development as Mandarin’s first soccer park, which opened for the inaugural game March 7, 1997. An additional 1.1-acre parcel for the park was donated to the City in 1998. The park is named for Chuck Rogers (1909-1980), who worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. for 41 years. He started and ran the City’s youth leagues in all sports, was the guiding light in the tremendous rise of slow-pitch softball in the City, served for many years as the grand marshal for the City’s parades, and much more. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

We have an upscale and modern atmosphere that is conveniently located in Fleming Island where parents can shop or work out while their child focuses on superior dance instruction. We have a friendly and courteous staff and our instructors are trained at the most recent dance conventions with innovative and up to date choreography.

We limit the size of our classes based on age. Our Twinkling Tots and Preschool classes are limited to 6 students per instructor. Beginner and Intermediate classes are limited to 12 students per instructor. Advanced and Teen classes are limited to 15 students per instructor.
