Ultimate Beaches Guide:
This is often the first beach we visit, primarily because of proximity to the Beaches Town Center. I told you I loved this place. The local, coastal vibe just makes me happy. When you are ready to put your toes in the sand, it is fairly easy to find public access parking. We seldom, if ever, pack a lunch when we go to Neptune Beach because you are just a short stroll to some pretty tasty restaurants. Our favorite stops on Neptune Beach days are MShack when we are in the mood for simple burger and fries, Poe’s Tavern, and, of course, Dreamette. Yes, I said Dreamette. There is a new location just behind the Starbucks. From Neptune Beach, you can get to Jarboe or Bull Park quickly by car or bike.

Peterbrooke founder and renowned chocolate expert, Phyllis Lockwood Geiger, opened her first chocolate shop in Jacksonville, Florida’s San Marco neighborhood in 1983. Her mission was to bring back the art of European chocolate making and translate it into what she calls, “Your Neighborhood Chocolatier.”

Named in honor of talented and troubled author Edgar Allan Poe, Poe’s Tavern first opened on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston, South Carolina in 2003, and expanded to north Florida in the summer of 2011. Poe’s brings its second store to Atlantic Beach, two blocks from the ocean at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and 3rd Street / A1A, 30 minutes due east of downtown Jacksonville. Poe’s is an American gastropub offering 50+ beers with an emphasis on craft, high gravity and local/regional selections. Poe’s is best known for its gourmet hamburgers – ground in-house and cooked to order – and its hand-cut french fries. Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10.

Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.

Mezza Restaurant and Bar is a neighborhood restaurant located in the Beaches Town Center in Neptune Beach. If you’ve been around Jacksonville for awhile, you may have known it as Mezza Luna, which has been a fixture of the beaches for more than 25 years. Owners, Niall and Nancy Falloon were partners in Mezza Luna before becoming sole owners in 2007. Last year, they changed the name to Mezza Restaurant and Bar to more accurately reflect the menu, which features contemporary American fare.

I have worked in Duval County Schools for 2 years and before that, I worked for 3 years doing outpatient pediatric rehab at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. I have familiarity with speech (articulation), fluency (stuttering), apraxia, language disorders, dyslexia, phonological disorders, reading, AAC (augmentative or alternative communication) devices, social skills, independent living behavior and language, cleft palate, Autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, low cognition, Down Syndrome, and some feeding and behavioral experience. While prior musical training is not necessary to participate, an audition is required for singers in grades 2-12. To ensure that we are keeping your health and safety our top priority, auditions can be scheduled virtually or in-person with social distancing and a mask required. There is no fee to audition. Need-based scholarships are available.

Atlantic Beach is a terrific beach to explore with families. Bull Park is located just a few blocks from the ocean and offers a picnic zone or alternate play area (shaded playground!) if you or your little one needs a break from the sand and surf. There is not a lot of parking located near the beach, so your best bet is to find parking at either Jack Russell Park, Bull Park, or the Beaches Town Center area and walk to the ocean. From most of the Atlantic Beach public access points, you are a short to medium size walk to the Beaches Town Center, where you can find lovely local dining options and shopping alike!

Atlantic Beach Arts Market is a creative space filled with an artist co-op gallery of over 90 vendors, a learning studio, and a vintage market. We offer a variety of classes, in an array of art mediums, for children, as well as adults.

The Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association is a North Florida youth sport association founded by three area coaches in 1989 for the purpose of promoting the sport of volleyball for school age students in the city and surrounding areas. These coaches were Mary Andrew (Former Head Coach, FSCJ), Elise Bush (Head Coach, The Bolles School), and Brandy King (Former Head Coach, Mayport Middle School).

The Jordan Park Community Center is a 2000 square foot of space – housing both Beaches Habitat and the community center. Hours normal hours of operation are noon to 6 pm.  The Community Center is available for rent with a 4-hour minimum of $100, plus a $200 refundable security deposit.

To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Children may read to either dogs or cats and may bring their reading materials or borrow books from our Pawsitive Reading library.

“WHAT WE DO” St Johns Taekwondo is passionate about seeing students grow through martial arts training. Our program is a South Korean based Taekwondo system used by the South Korean Military and the South Korean Presidential Body Guards. Taekwondo is known for devastating kicks but make no mistake it has many weapons in its arsenal. The hand techniques are practiced and conditioned by breaking objects such as boards, roof tiles and cement blocks. All the techniques from kicks, strikes, down to blocks were developed to maximize damage with every blow. We also practice Taegeuk “Poomse” meaning forms or patterns. These are pre-arranged fight sequences that are practiced to develop hand-eye coordination, timing, balance, power, speed, discipline and overall body structure.

“WHY WE DO IT” St Johns Taekwondo is headed up by Master Joe Gaines a 20 year veteran of the martial arts community. Master Gaines is currently a 4th Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt and has an Associate Level Coaches certification through USA Taekwondo. Ultimate Beaches Guide: It just doesn’t feel quite like summer until we have made our first trip to Mickler’s Beach. Located on the south end of Ponte Vedra Beach, it is a beautiful, easy-to-navigate beach. The beach access point provides ample parking, restrooms, showers and a handicapped accessible dune walk-over. We always find amazing seashells and shark teeth walking along this beautiful stretch beach. It is not atypical to see fisherman pulling in some fairly impressive catch off the shoreline or find yourself strolling alongside a horseback rider. Some of our most idyllic days happened at Mickler’s. This beach is a bit out of the way, so we tend to pack a picnic lunch although you are just a short drive away from dining options off of A1A.

Scenic A1A: The four-lane roads of Ponte Vedra Beach narrow to two as nature takes over the ride. The first public beach in Ponte Vedra, a favorite of locals, lies two blocks east of A1A at the last traffic light you’ll see for 20 miles. On the right the turn street is called Mickler Road; on the left Ponta Vedra Boulevard. Even though there is no sign designating this hidden gem, take the left. Mickler’s Landing, pronounced “Myklers” by locals, a local favorite famous for its pink, coquina-sand stretches of beach, has no sign at all. So finding it is a special delight. The wooden walkway through the twenty-foot high sand dunes gives you the first inkling that a special place is about to be revealed.

Growing Together Behavioral Center is one of Jacksonville’s premier schools for children with autism and developmental disabilities. We pride ourselves on being a school where each child is treated as an individual, and educational plans are tailored to their personal needs.

For the 2018-2019 school year, we are excited to partner with 25 students with autism and other developmental disabilities, ages 3 through 15 years. For each child, we will offer a comprehensive educational and therapeutic program, specifically providing students with customized academic plans, while integrating proven, research-based behavioral strategies into every learning task. Our school is unique from the public school settings, as we are able to focus on the specific needs of each individual child, whether academic, life skills, or behavioral. We are also unique in that we offer year-round school and extremely low student to teacher ratio (largest class 6:2), both of which are proven methods to help our children work toward their highest level of learning.

At Growing Together we believe that all students affected by autism and other developmental disabilities can reach their fullest potential through an education based in structure, fun engagement with peers, and loving teachers and staff supporting and encouraging them daily. Each child’s individual strengths and challenges are continually assessed to direct the child’s teachers in selecting the best methodologies to target the child’s current needs. We believe that open communication between teachers, staff, and families is a must, and we have communication plans in place with each family to meet those needs.

Champions Rainbow Rec Gymnastics Program is structured to follow USA Gymnastics guidelines and is designed to provide each child with top quality learning experience in a safe and loving environment. We offer levels for the first timer all the way up to the most advanced gymnast. Classes are offered for boys ages 3-7 and girls ages 3-14. Our Rainbow Rec program concentrates on defined skills mastery and student evaluations. Each skill level of this program coincides with a color in the rainbow. Once a gymnast successfully completes all skills in a level, they will graduate to the next color level of the program and commence learning more advanced skills.
