Community Connections Child Development Center

We serve low-income children from the residents of our Davis Center from six weeks to 5 years of age in our four-star, state-of-the-art program. Age appropriate activities encourage positive and healthy development. Our Center offers the new Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK); low teacher to children ratio, breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack provided at no additional cost.

After School Programs

After school programs are available at 5 sites including TEAM UP sites at Hyde Grove, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Oak Hill Elementary Schools; and four community based sites supervised homework assistance, tutoring programs, the NFL Play 60 physical fitness program; engaging field trips, and the Jaguars’ Honor Rows location.

Confederate Playground is located near downtown, in the Springfield section of north Jacksonville. First named Dignan Park, for a chairman of the Board of Public Works, it opened in 1907 and contained the City’s first supervised playground. The United Confederate Veterans chose Jacksonville as the site for their twenty-fourth annual reunion in 1914, which was attended by an estimated 48,000 former Confederate soldiers. Many of the activities took place in the park, and five months later it was renamed, Confederate Park. Troops, many from the nearby Armory, used the playground portion of the park for drill grounds and tent/hut encampments during both World Wars. The playground was permanently established as a separate facility from Confederate Park in the 1950’s, and today provides open space and recreational facilities for residents of the Springfield and downtown communities.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

Oakland Park is located in the Oakland section of downtown Jacksonville, and has been City property since the 1880’s. The residential community of Oakland emerged during the 1870’s and was oriented toward working-class families. West of the park lies the Old City Cemetery established in 1852, and along the park’s northern boundary, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, which is a part of the Old City Cemetery. AIR FORCE JROTC MAGNET The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a magnet program that focuses on leadership education to instill values of citizenship, character, and integrity. Upon completing three years of the Air Force JROTC program, students receive a Certificate of Completion. If cadets elect to enlist in the Armed Forces, the Certificate of Completion from the JROTC program will allow them to enlist as a pay grade E-3 in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or an E2 pay grade in the Marine Corp.

HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY The Health Sciences Academy offers a unique educational experience to students who wish to pursue a career in the health care industry. I specialize in baby + child portraiture because some of the most precious photographs I have are those of my mother when she was a child. She died in 2015, and all that are left are the photos. I know that when I have children, and they have children, I’ll still have those photographs of her to show them.

Angelina Danese Park is located in south Jacksonville, at the intersection of Danese Court and St. Augustine Road. The site comprised part of the Philips community that was established in the last half of the 1800’s. Alexander and Angelina Danese, who arrived in America as immigrants from Italy in 1885, had twelve children following their marriage in 1898. The couple established their home on the park property in 1929, and after their deaths the children wanted to honor their parents’ memory. Their son Emanuel Danese, and his wife Mary Margaret, later donated the property to the city in 1973 for use as a passive public park – in honor of his parents and with the stipulation that it be named for his mother. But the site remained a vacant tract until the city, with the aid of City Councilmen Matt Carlucci and Reggie Fullwood, developed the property as a neighborhood park, which opened in March 2003.

Concord Park is located in the in the Lake Forest section of northwest Jacksonville, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and U.S. Interstate 95. The Jacksonville Fire Museum serves as an educational link between past and present. Through the years, thousands of visitors have toured the museum, learning about the rich history of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

At the Jacksonville Fire Museum, you will see thousands of items detailing the history of the fire service not only in Jacksonville, but the entire state of Florida. Exhibits include photos from the Great Fire of 1901, a fully-restored 1902 American LaFrance horse-drawn fire engine, and a working 1926 American LaFrance fire engine.

If your kids love fire trucks and firemen then this museum is worth a visit. Located in Metropolitan Park this small museum offers visitors lots of information about the history of fire service in Jacksonville and in Florida.

Crabtree Park is located in the Lakewood area, three blocks east of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and University Blvd. West. Walter Crabtree developed the entire Lakewood area between 1946 and 1961, some of it around picturesque New Ross Creek that meanders through the northwest section. He conveyed the land for the park to Duval County in several deeds between 1957 and 1963. For over fifty years, Walter R. Crabtree (1899-1993) was a real estate developer and builder in Duval County. He operated his own lumber company, and built the Lakewood Apartments across from the park. The Town of Orange Park Farmer’s and Arts’ Market was created in September 2012. The market is run by The Town of Orange Park Events and Recreation Division. We have grown tremendously since our opening day. We now have over 100 vendors on a regular basis that offer a variety of homemade and homegrown products from local merchants, live entertainment, food on-site, and a great family atmosphere!

When is the market held? The market is held on most 1st and 3rd Sunday’s of each month from 11am-4pm. Some Sunday’s we’re closed due to special events or holidays. Our season runs from September through May and we are closed June, July, and August.

Where is the market located? The market is located on the busy corner of US17 and Kingsley Ave. 2042 Park Ave, Orange Park, FL 32073. This is an outdoor market and sometimes due to inclement weather the market may be closed. Just look for the large yellow signs!

What can you expect to find at the market? We offer a huge variety of quality handmade and homegrown items. You will find nearly anything your heart desires from locally grown honey, cupcakes, pies, salsa, granola, plants, produce, raw milk, eggs, cheeses, hand crafted jewelry, bird houses, pottery pieces, didgeridoos, soaps, and many many more handcrafted items!

Where do I park? Due to the success of our market, parking can, unfortunately, be problematic. We suggest parking at CVS/Winn Dixie and using the pedestrian crosswalks to enter the market. There is also parking at Town Hall off of US 17 and Smith St and Kingsley Ave- both of these areas offer limited parking.

How do I become a vendor? All vendors are required to fill out an application. Applications can be found on our website click here or you can pick up an application at Town Hall or our booth at the market.

Family Support Services of North Florida (FSSNF) is the lead agency for foster care, adoption and family preservation in Duval and Nassau counties.
