Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Urban Folk Farm is a new farm on the southwest corner of Jacksonville located near the Equestrian Center. We are two city folks from Miami who want to provide naturally grown, great tasting, and healthy food to the Jacksonville community.

The fall of 2014 was our first planting season. This year, we are planting several varieties of bok choy, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and lettuce, carrots, beets and many more delicious vegetables. Not only are we planting on our fields, but part of Urban Folk Farm is also dedicated to small scale permaculture; we’ve got veggies growing all over! We have small orchard of young fruit and nut trees. Currently, we have a few free range chickens, but our girls don’t venture too far from their coop because of the hawks in the pine scrub that surrounds our farm. We have a limited amount of eggs for sale.

The Ortega Hills Playground is located in the Ortega Hills area across from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The name Ortega derives from Joseph de Ortega, a judge during the second Spanish occupation of Florida from 1783-1821. In 1804, when John McIntosh bought the plantation that is present-day Ortega, he named it for the judge who facilitated his purchase of the property. Development of Ortega Hills began in 1954, and Devco Inc. donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1959. In recent years the local Community Association, led by its tireless founder Charles Zilla, lobbied for a new park that resulted in a major renovation in 2001. Park usage then increased dramatically, as people rushed to use the new facilities, which included landscaping and a walking/jogging trail around the perimeter.

This class is most appropriate for children aged 10 months to about 3.5 years old!

Classes are held at the Dubow Preschool in Mandarin at 3662 Crown Point Rd.

This class combines strength training and power walking. Class ends with a focus on improving core strength and flexibility. This 45 minutes we will focus on Mommy or Daddy, so any child who still sits in a stroller is welcome!

Family Music & Movement classes incorporate songs with movement and various hand held instruments. Classes are mixed-age but geared to 0-2 yrs old.

Ringhaver Park is located in southwest Jacksonville, extending south from 118th Street, along the western border of the Ortega River. The City acquired the land comprising the park in 1971, 1972, 1996, and 2000. The park is named for Lambert C. Ringhaver (1910-1976), whose family made a memorial donation for the initial park development, which has grown from 36 acres in 1977 to 576 acres in 2003. We welcome ALL women, ALL ages, and ALL fitness levels. We offer programming for walkers to beginning runners to experienced runners. Our “learn to run” program begins with mostly walking and gradually transitions to more jogging. Experienced runners will be challenged to improve their times and endurance. Each class includes strength, stretching, and cardio training.

Losco Regional Park feels like you’re in the country with its quiet atmosphere complete with a scenic paved trail that wraps around the wooded park, one multi-use field, soccer fields and two playgrounds – including one for toddlers. Losco Park also boasts a splash pad when it’s time to cool off!
