Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

Ultimate Beaches Guide: When we want to immerse ourselves in the natural coastal environment, we head to Guana State Park. It is located just south of the Mickler’s Beach access. As with Hanna Park, there is an entry fee; but it is an even better deal at just $3.00 per vehicle up to 8 people. This beach access is gorgeous and provides ample parking. These beaches are beautiful coquina beaches, rich in sand and shells. We always find tons of oceanic wildlife enjoying the beaches with us. Beach access is open from 8 am until sunset every day. While there is not easy access to playgrounds, you can head across the street to enjoy education center and river/marsh hiking trails. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a day wrapped in nature.

Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. In 1929, the City’s second playground for African-American children was established there and named La Villa Playground. Florida Dwight (1886-1977), the playground’s first recreation director, pioneered organized recreation for the City’s African-American community from 1918 (with the opening of Oakland Park) until her retirement in 1950. To honor her years of devoted work, the playground was renamed in 1983, and then designated a local historic landmark in 1995.

Students in our gifted program are challenged daily with accelerated gifted curriculum. Coastal Kicks is a youth soccer training and development company offering programs throughout the year to the communities of North Florida and Coastal Georgia. Coastal Kicks offers different soccer programs including private training, park programs, summer camps, clinics, and after-school enrichment for both public and private schools. Programs are open to both boys and girls of all skill levels from age three to the older competitive advanced youth club and high school athlete.

Our Mission: We help at-risk students earn a regular high school diploma and prepare for post-secondary success. We offer an instructional calendar beyond the traditional 180 days to give students more opportunity to continue working toward meeting graduation goals. Program Offered:

Murray Hill is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits at his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

TnT is a daily after-school program. TnT (Tennis-n-Tutoring) operates from 3pm-6pm, Monday-Friday in the MaliVai Washington Youth Center. TnT contains 3 sessions daily which provide academic assistance, tennis/fitness activities and life skills classes. Each child also receives a nutritious snack daily. Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Murray Hill incorporated in 1916 and remained a separate municipality until its annexation by Jacksonville in 1925. In 1941, the heirs of J. Graeme Drew sold the park property to the City. Several athletic associations have used and helped maintain the playground over the years including the Murray Hill Youth Assoc., the Wright Youth Assoc., and most recently the Murray Hill Athletic Assoc. Improvement projects in 2001-2003 added two scoreboards, a walk path, fencing for two T-ball fields, a water feature, three portable shelters, a playscape and more.

Murray Drive Playground is one of four City parks in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. The property was platted in 1910, and the street along the site’s eastern side was originally named Harkisheimer Avenue. William Harkisheimer was one of the developers of the Edgewood subdivision and probably Murray Hill Heights also. In later years, officials changed the street’s name to Murray Drive. The County purchased the land for the park in 1947, and acquired another small portion in 1961. Since Murray Hill’s oldest house was built in 1897, the area has grown to over five thousand homes in 2003. The small neighborhood park provides children’s play equipment and two benches for relaxation, under a canopy of spreading oak trees.

The playground at J.P. Small Park was renamed in June 2007 to honor Eugene M. GLover. Mr. Glover, who passed away in 2006, was affectionately known by friends, colleagues and the young people he worked with as the “Gentle Giant.” He spent 42 years working in a variety of capacities for the PREC Department; most notably at J.P. Small Park, which was named for his high school coach and mentor. A sign has been erected in the park officially naming the playground for the former Stanton High School and Florida A&M University athlete and brother of the former sheriff, Nat Glover.

AIR FORCE JROTC MAGNET The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a magnet program that focuses on leadership education to instill values of citizenship, character, and integrity. Upon completing three years of the Air Force JROTC program, students receive a Certificate of Completion. If cadets elect to enlist in the Armed Forces, the Certificate of Completion from the JROTC program will allow them to enlist as a pay grade E-3 in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or an E2 pay grade in the Marine Corp.

HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY The Health Sciences Academy offers a unique educational experience to students who wish to pursue a career in the health care industry. Upon graduating from Andrew Jackson, students have the entry-level job skills needed to successfully pursue careers in many of the various health-related occupations. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience and rigorous critical thinking skills. This program also enables students to meet high school graduation requirements while earning college credits.

Our Community Education program provides quality services and programs after-school that involve various groups and agencies throughout our community. These include classes, homeowner’s groups, Scout troops, support groups, health and crime-related workshops and more.

Wiley Road Playground is located at the intersection of Lane Avenue and Wiley Road in southwest Jacksonville. It resides adjacent to the Cedar Hills Estates neighborhood that was developed in the latter 1950’s, and across from Hyde Grove Elementary School that that was built in 1960. The City purchased most of the playground property in 1971, and obtained the rest when for a portion of Coulee Ave. was closed two years later. The property remained undeveloped for several years, and HUD built a Senior Citizen Center at the site about 1980-81. During its early years, the playground contained an athletic field, tennis and shuffleboard courts, restrooms, and a sizeable undeveloped area. Recent improvements include a new water feature in 2001 and a major addition to the Senior Center in 2003.

The Arlington Lions Club park and playground is located along the St. Johns River. Amenities include: nature areas, picnic shelters, boat and kayak ramp and a scenic boardwalk.

Before You Tie the Knot is for couples and singles interested in marriage at some point in their lives. She will also discuss the eight needs of every partner, parent and child, the rewards of positive parenting (including step parenting), the importance of money management, and the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle. The Gifted Program is an enrichment curriculum to stimulate and encourage creative learning for students. The classroom uses divergent tasks to take the students outside their nine dots. There are several projects that require problem solving to create an acceptable solution. In addition to hands on projects, they go on many field trips to learn firsthand the culture and creative methods of each place visited. A real memorable learning experience engrained in each child.

Students in Gifted Class have unique opportunities to receive a participatory and experimental approach to learning. The students achieve hands on levels of learning and knowledge not available in text books.

Captain Alvarez is a fourth-generation Jacksonville local who has grown up fishing these waters. His love for the ocean started at a very young age, not only fishing but also surfing our beaches. You will be fishing on a 2016 Pathfinder 24-foot center console, powered by a Yamaha 300 horsepower outboard. We fish exclusively with Penn reels, most of which are paired on Ugly Stik rods. When filling out a magnet application, you must select only one of these tracks. If you apply for both your application may be rejected by the magnet office. You can only apply for the gifted track if your student has been certified as gifted by DCPS, otherwise you must apply for the academically talented track. Both tracks have similar curricula and course progressions, because JWJ only offers advanced courses. Hammond Park is located in west Jacksonville at the intersection of 12th Street and Melson Avenue. In 1923, the property comprised part of a site used for airplane takeoffs and landings, and was named Paxon Field for the tract’s owner, E. H. Paxon. After opening in 1955 as Paxon Park, the name was changed to honor Duval County Commissioner Joseph F. Hammond (1885-1967), who, except for two years, served continuously from 1921-1961. In 1994 a major renovation of the ball fields occurred, and an improvement project in 2004 added a new building with a two-story scorebox, restrooms, and a handicap-accessible concession stand.

Concord Park is located in the in the Lake Forest section of northwest Jacksonville, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and U.S. Interstate 95. After filing of the first plat in 1926, it was not until around 1944 that development began again in Lake Forest, whose streets and parks exhibit an American Revolutionary War theme. Concord Park is one of two half-oval parks that were named and platted by the developers in 1944. Battles at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775 between the colonial Minutemen and the British redcoats marked the beginning of the War. Through the years, the park has remained a small, neighborhood facility with play equipment for the children, and a major improvement project in 1999 added picnic facilities, new benches, and a water fountain. With several towering pine trees providing shade and visual relief, the park offers a place for fellowship and relaxation.
