Concord Park is located in the in the Lake Forest section of northwest Jacksonville, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and U.S. Interstate 95. After filing of the first plat in 1926, it was not until around 1944 that development began again in Lake Forest, whose streets and parks exhibit an American Revolutionary War theme. Concord Park is one of two half-oval parks that were named and platted by the developers in 1944. Battles at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775 between the colonial Minutemen and the British redcoats marked the beginning of the War. Through the years, the park has remained a small, neighborhood facility with play equipment for the children, and a major improvement project in 1999 added picnic facilities, new benches, and a water fountain. With several towering pine trees providing shade and visual relief, the park offers a place for fellowship and relaxation.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are a minor league baseball team based in Jacksonville, Florida. The team is a member of the Southern League and is the class Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

This park is named after A. Philip Randolph who grew up in Jacksonville and became one of the most important figures of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. A life-size bronze statue of Olympic Gold Medallist and Dallas Cowboy star, Bob Hayes, was added to the park in November 2002. Hayes grew up in Jacksonville, less than a mile from the park. Park amenities include playscapes, an amphitheater, picnic tables, benches and restrooms.

The Ortega Hills Playground is located in the Ortega Hills area across from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The name Ortega derives from Joseph de Ortega, a judge during the second Spanish occupation of Florida from 1783-1821. In 1804, when John McIntosh bought the plantation that is present-day Ortega, he named it for the judge who facilitated his purchase of the property. Development of Ortega Hills began in 1954, and Devco Inc. donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1959. In recent years the local Community Association, led by its tireless founder Charles Zilla, lobbied for a new park that resulted in a major renovation in 2001. Park usage then increased dramatically, as people rushed to use the new facilities, which included landscaping and a walking/jogging trail around the perimeter.

Angelina Danese Park is located in south Jacksonville, at the intersection of Danese Court and St. Augustine Road. The site comprised part of the Philips community that was established in the last half of the 1800’s. Alexander and Angelina Danese, who arrived in America as immigrants from Italy in 1885, had twelve children following their marriage in 1898. The couple established their home on the park property in 1929, and after their deaths the children wanted to honor their parents’ memory. Their son Emanuel Danese, and his wife Mary Margaret, later donated the property to the city in 1973 for use as a passive public park – in honor of his parents and with the stipulation that it be named for his mother. But the site remained a vacant tract until the city, with the aid of City Councilmen Matt Carlucci and Reggie Fullwood, developed the property as a neighborhood park, which opened in March 2003.

Gifted Program at CLE

The Gifted Program is an enrichment curriculum to stimulate and encourage creative learning for students. The classroom uses divergent tasks to take the students outside their nine dots. They are challenged with problem solving to develop critical thinking skills. This approach requires alternative ideas. There are several projects that require problem solving to create an acceptable solution. In addition to hands on projects, they go on many field trips to learn firsthand the culture and creative methods of each place visited. A real memorable learning experience engrained in each child.

Students in Gifted Class have unique opportunities to receive a participatory and experimental approach to learning. The students achieve hands on levels of learning and knowledge not available in text books.

In order for a child to be in the Gifted Program, they must be first recommended to the Guidance office by their teacher or parents can request testing. Your child’s homeroom teacher is your first point of contact at the school. Once they are recommended, they will be tested to see if they qualify for gifted services.

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts is a Duval County Public School for students grades 9 through 12 with a desire for intensive study in the arts.

Exhibits include photos from the Great Fire of 1901, a fully-restored 1902 American LaFrance horse-drawn fire engine, and a working 1926 American LaFrance fire engine.

If your kids love fire trucks and firemen then this museum is worth a visit. Located in Metropolitan Park this small museum offers visitors lots of information about the history of fire service in Jacksonville and in Florida.

Urban Folk Farm is a new farm on the southwest corner of Jacksonville located near the Equestrian Center. We are two city folks from Miami who want to provide naturally grown, great tasting, and healthy food to the Jacksonville community.

The fall of 2014 was our first planting season. This year, we are planting several varieties of bok choy, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and lettuce, carrots, beets and many more delicious vegetables. Not only are we planting on our fields, but part of Urban Folk Farm is also dedicated to small scale permaculture; we’ve got veggies growing all over! We have small orchard of young fruit and nut trees. Currently, we have a few free range chickens, but our girls don’t venture too far from their coop because of the hawks in the pine scrub that surrounds our farm. We have a limited amount of eggs for sale.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

Cesery Park is located in Arlington’s Lake Lucina neighborhood, at the corner of Cesery Boulevard and Columbine Street. The park and boulevard are named for William R. Cesery (1912-1996), a pioneer developer of Arlington who started the trend of building larger apartment complexes in Jacksonville. Kent’s U-Pick Fresh Blueberry Farm uses no pesticides on the blueberry bushes. Reservations required. Listed on Facebook. They try to estimate how plentiful the berries will be to accommodate and if weather permits. The season usually lasts six weeks. Mid-May to end of June. During blueberry season, the blueberries do not ripen all at the same time. There are no restroom facilities. Normally schedule Wednesday or Saturday from 7:30 to 12 noon for picking. If the schedule is not on Facebook, call to see what days are open and to make reservations.

Directions: Blueberry field is located at the end of Thomas Mill Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Starting at Lem Turner Road and Highway I – 295, head out north on Lem Turner Road (SR-115) toward Callahan, and go 3.5 miles to Braddock Road. Turn left onto Braddock Road, go one block, and turn left onto Thomas Mill Road (the first part is short and paved). Continue straight onto the dirt part a short distance and look for the windmill. Turn right at the windmill for the entrance and parking. The parking area can accommodate 30 vehicles at a time.
