The JCA Aquatics Department is committed to the development of swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Swimming is a lifetime activity, focusing on the enjoyment, health benefits and competition. Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. The concentration involved while taking Pure Barre allows you to block “life” out for the hour, creating the mental benefits similarly obtained by the practice of yoga or meditation. A transformed body and a clear head in just one hour—it doesn’t get much better than this.

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.

You and your child will explore the world of colors using the five senses! We will get a little messy through touch, taste, and a lot of fun! Our time together will include: circle time, using the senses, learning through stories, and nutritious, yummy snacks! This class is most appropriate for children aged 10 months to about 3.5 years old!

Classes are held at the Dubow Preschool in Mandarin at 3662 Crown Point Rd.

This class combines strength training and power walking. Class ends with a focus on improving core strength and flexibility. This 45 minutes we will focus on Mommy or Daddy, so any child who still sits in a stroller is welcome!
Please bring a towel, water, and a resistance band.

Family Music & Movement classes incorporate songs with movement and various hand held instruments. Classes are mixed-age but geared to 0-2 yrs old.

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

San Jose Schools is a tuition-free, public charter school group that offers an abundance of school choice to fit every family’s needs. Students graduate career and college ready.

St. Nicholas Playground is located adjacent to Spring Park Road in the St. Nicholas/Spring Park section of Jacksonville. Following City land purchases in 1936 and 1937, the park was created and originally named Spring Park, and was expanded by additional land acquisitions in 1944. The St. Nicholas Park and Home Park subdivisions were developed near the park in the late 1930’s to meet the housing needs of Jacksonville’s growing middle class, and the Spring Park Elementary School opened adjacent to the park in 1942. The playground became a popular site for games of the City’s baseball leagues. I’m a DONA International Certified Birth Doula based in Jacksonville, FL. My initial introduction to this career was watching the reality show called “Meet the Cromarties”; Antonio Cromartie’s wife was giving birth to his 13th and their 5th baby together. She had an at-home water birth and the engagement of the doula enlightened me. The doula helped her manage the pain with no medication, was supportive and comforting. I was genuinely, in awe. That’s when I said, “that’s what I want to do!”

The main motivation of a doula is to help women have a memorable and empowering birth that the woman desires. The experiences I have had have taught me additional techniques of support and comfort each time. Having me as your doula I will provide comfort, peace of mind, and deliver on your desired birthing experience.

St. Nicholas Playground is located adjacent to Spring Park Road in the St. Nicholas/Spring Park section of Jacksonville. Following City land purchases in 1936 and 1937, the park was created and originally named Spring Park, and was expanded by additional land acquisitions in 1944. The property at 10244 103rd Street was originally purchased by Duval County on August 19, 1960 from Hercules, Inc. The park consists of a 0.5-mile lighted asphalt Go-Kart track, bleachers, grills, restrooms and parking. The North Florida Kart Club has been active at the site since its early days and has helped in its maintenance and park improvements by its fund-raising efforts. At Tumblrz we offer an outstanding minis program that is specially designed for the 3 to 6 year old tumbler. Our challenging and fun program focuses on various aspects of the child’s physical, mental, and social development while having lots of fun! We begin with a foundation of gymnastics to build strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. Your child will learn various skills through movement such as balance and concentration when working on the beam. They will test their strength when learning basic gymnastics skills such as forward rolls and cartwheels. This sets the groundwork for moving into more advanced tumbling and gymnastics skills when they are older but not only that, these skills when started young tend to promote healthy growth and development that will follow them well into adulthood.

At Tumblrz, learning opportunities are pushed to the next level when we incorporate colors, shapes, and numbers along with using hand, eye, and foot coordination. By combining the physical and mental aspect we are able to promote the development of the child’s neurological pathways, positively effecting mood, memory, attention span, and behavior.
