Developed during the Great Depression and subsequent recession of 1937, the organization that has become Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. (JALA) was born when a group of Jacksonville Bar attorneys banded together to provide legal services to those in need. Called different names over the years including Duval County Legal Aid Association, it was officially named Jacksonville Area Legal Aid in 1973. The organization achieved 501(c)3 status in 1976. JALA now serves 17 counties of North Florida including Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor and Union.

JALA is a primary engine for economic and social justice in Northeast Florida.

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

The Cathedral Arts Project is the leading nonprofit provider of quality, comprehensive and ongoing instruction in the visual and performing arts for school-aged children in Northeast Florida.

CAP is offering free virtual and in-person courses in art as therapy, dance, media arts, music, and theatre for children of all ages!

Virtual courses are six weeks long and are offered on a quarterly basis. In-person courses are year-long and offered at schools and community centers throughout Duval County. Here are a few things to note:

• Virtual courses are available to any student, no matter what school they attend! In-person courses are available only to students already enrolled at that school or site.
• Capacity for all courses is limited to ensure quality instruction and maximize time with teaching artists and classmates.
• CAP provides free supplies for virtual courses to students in Duval County, which will be available for pick-up. Supplies for in-person courses are also provided for free.

In order to join the Pawsitive Reading program, children AND at least one parent/guardian must first attend a one-time Pawsitive Reading orientation. We offer several orientations each month. Upcoming orientation dates and sign-up links are below. Advance registration is required.

Please note: We are unable to offer Pawsitive Reading orientations in June and July due to JHS Summer Camp.

Orientations will take place in either the JHS Education Center or Conference Room (both are located upstairs, above the Adoption Center). Our address is 8464 Beach Blvd. Please arrive on time. The orientation will be around 40 minutes in length.

After attending an orientation, children and an adult chaperone may come to JHS to read to the animals anytime our Adoption Center is open (12pm-7pm on weekdays, 10am-5pm on weekends). Participants must sign in and out at the front desk when visiting JHS to read.

To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Children may read to either dogs or cats and may bring their reading materials or borrow books from our Pawsitive Reading library.

Participants will receive a free book courtesy of The Jim Moran Foundation while supplies are available.

The Jacksonville Humane Society provides care, comfort and compassion to animals in need while engaging the hearts, hands and minds of our community to bring about an end to the killing of abandoned and orphaned shelter animals.

The Duval County Library offers Traveling Tales Kits available for check out from the Main Library in downtown Jacksonville for free. The kits include books, puppets, songs, craft ideas, snack recipes, a music CD, a DVD, and a flannel board story all related to a theme. This is the perfect way to have story time in your own home, or with your playgroup. You must visit the Main Library to check out the kits, but they can be returned to any Duval County Library.

The PRS Running Club of Jacksonville Florida was founded by a group of friends who felt that the Jacksonville running community needed a running club where, on any given day of the week, runners of all abilities could meet up with their friends for a hard run and a good time.

Unlike other running clubs in Jacksonville Florida, the PRS Running Club has its own coach, Paul McRae. Coach McRae, a legendary runner in the Jacksonville community, is a native of New Zealand and president of Personal Running Solutions, a local Jacksonville business that provides customized training plans and offers one on one training sessions. In fact, the symbol of the PRS Running Club, the running kiwi, affectionately known as “Paul”, is the national symbol of New Zealand, known for its ability to survive and persevere even in the most adverse of conditions and circumstances, qualities that are important to any runner. Coach McRae, who has run a 2:27:50 marathon, 1:04:35 half marathon, 28:53 10K and 13:57 5K, along with winning the inaugural Melbourne Marathon and hundreds of local races, attends most of the group runs providing encouragement, inspiration and insight.

The PRS Running Club, with a mission of promoting and encouraging running by educating the community about the benefits of long distance running and endurance athletics, has monthly social events, annual running retreats, puts on fun races to bring new people into running (like the Bold City Beer Run Series and the Krispy Kreme Challenge), and provides scholarships to deserving local high school athletes.

Michael Rossi created Wild Wonders in 2002 with the purpose of entertaining while teaching about animals, this is an new outreach program for northeast Florida that includes exotic animals. They come to you! All animals are well cared for and inspected by the USDA, insured and licensed. The program runs for 45 minutes to an hour and teaches children about local and exotic animals in a fun and interesting way. Children are encouraged to pet, hold or just gander at some of these critters.

I was raised in Jacksonville and have fond memories of growing up here. I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in International Marketing and a Minor in Spanish. I studied International Business while living in Valencia, Spain. I worked as a non-profit director for Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International and then as a Project Manager for E-proDirect, an online marketing agency for the Hospitality Industry. After moving back home to Jacksonville I worked as a Lead Field Organizer for Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods. Throughout all of my work experience, my favorite thing I have done has been investing in Real Estate, which I started doing while attending FSU. In this comprehensive series, you and your partner/coach will increase your confidence in the birthing process as you gain a better understanding of what to expect. The series includes information on stages and phases of labor, pain management, cesarean birth, postpartum care and normal newborn characteristics.

Safe Sitter® Class Description

Safe Sitter® prepares students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting.

Students learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who’s choking, and helpful information like what to do if there’s severe weather. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR manikins to practice CPR and choking rescue!

The Green Team Project (GTP) is a grassroots environmental non-profit project of the Tides Center whose focus is to empower and motivate people to make a difference environmentally through their own practices.

We are dedicated to changing long-term consumption behavior, increasing environmental awareness and stewardship, creating a greater sense of community, improving the quality of life, and having fun.

Green Team Project has educational programs for every member of the community. Through Green Teams, individuals, businesses, schools, and other organizations turn good intentions into concrete positive environmental action. The average graduate of a Green Team saves between 10-30% in each of the five resource areas: water, energy, solid waste, chemicals, and transportation, as well as a fair amount of money.

By using the team process our participants have the support and motivation they need to follow through on conservation actions, learn new things, and adopt long-lasting environmental habits.

The STEAM Cultural Passport is a Duval County program that provides students in Title I elementary schools with three to four educational field trips per year. These field trip experiences are connected to programs and offerings in Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts, and Mathematics. Organizations are selected through an application process, and events are scheduled according to available services to schools. The program is currently funded through federal dollars and provides cultural experiences to students, most of whom would not otherwise receive these kinds of opportunities.

During each trip, the students will board a St. Johns River Taxi boat from Friendship Fountain Park for a 2-hour tour of the river. While on board, they will rotate through a series of educational activities that correlate to state standards and focus on river science.

Students will learn to use water quality monitoring equipment, gather and interpret water quality data, record observational data on manatees and dolphins in the St. Johns River, examine river plants and animals for adaptations that enable them to thrive in the river ecosystem, and use their water quality data and what they learn on the trips to make predictions about the future of the St. Johns River.

Jax Stroller Strength lets moms workout with their kids and gives them a chance to connect with other mothers. Bootcamp style classes are offered every day of the week at the Beaches, Mandarin, Riverside and Nocatee locations. Prenatal and postnatal yoga provides safe, simple, and effective exercises designed to help women cope with the changing needs of their body before and after pregnancy and birth. This approach is gentle and safe for women in all stages of pregnancy, and once recovered from birth. However, please discuss and get approval from your healthcare provider prior to attending.

Your little bundle of joy is coming and there is never enough time! So, we combined three of our parenting classes, Breastfeeding 101, Baby Care Basics and Happiest Baby on the Block into one. By the end of the day you will have the basic foundation needed to take care of your newborn.

Topics include: feeding cues, proper latch and position, basics of infant care, when to call the doctor, steps to calming a baby.

THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health (affiliated with Wolfson Children’s Hospital) is pleased to offer this free Safe Kids Buckle Up Workshop for parents and grandparents. Attendees will learn how to keep your precious cargo safe while riding in motor vehicles.

The class will teach you the proper way to install your car seat in your car. Upon completion of the class, certified technicians from Safe Kids will be on hand to help you install your seat correctly in your vehicle.

If you do not have a car seat and would like to purchase one, we offer reduced cost, convertible car seats.
