Labor is physically and emotionally challenging. Prepare yourself with comfort measures that can be used during early labor or for those choosing a more natural birth. This one-night virtual class will enhance what you have already learned in your childbirth preparation class. You’ll have an opportunity to review labor, practice relaxation and breathing exercises, positions, and comfort techniques.

We offer two options for this virtual class:

• 1 weeknight session, 1.5 hours

In this condensed virtual class an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or Certified Lactation Counselor will teach you the most important evidence based concepts needed to get breastfeeding off to the best start. There will be plenty of time at the end of class to ask questions.

• proper latch and position
• how long and how often to feed
• baby’s feeding cues
• signs that baby is getting enough
• breast care and comfort

Confederate Playground is located near downtown, in the Springfield section of north Jacksonville. First named Dignan Park, for a chairman of the Board of Public Works, it opened in 1907 and contained the City’s first supervised playground. The United Confederate Veterans chose Jacksonville as the site for their twenty-fourth annual reunion in 1914, which was attended by an estimated 48,000 former Confederate soldiers. Offering in person and online violin and viola lessons for students ages 10-100. I teach all levels, but specialize in getting students ready for youth orchestra, all-state orchestra, and college level auditions.

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10.

Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Kent’s U-Pick Fresh Blueberry Farm uses no pesticides on the blueberry bushes. Reservations required. Listed on Facebook. They try to estimate how plentiful the berries will be to accommodate and if weather permits. The season usually lasts six weeks. Mid-May to end of June. During blueberry season, the blueberries do not ripen all at the same time. There are no restroom facilities. Normally schedule Wednesday or Saturday from 7:30 to 12 noon for picking. If the schedule is not on Facebook, call to see what days are open and to make reservations.

Directions: Blueberry field is located at the end of Thomas Mill Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Starting at Lem Turner Road and Highway I – 295, head out north on Lem Turner Road (SR-115) toward Callahan, and go 3.5 miles to Braddock Road. Turn left onto Braddock Road, go one block, and turn left onto Thomas Mill Road (the first part is short and paved). Continue straight onto the dirt part a short distance and look for the windmill. Turn right at the windmill for the entrance and parking. The parking area can accommodate 30 vehicles at a time. Murray Drive Playground is one of four City parks in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. The property was platted in 1910, and the street along the site’s eastern side was originally named Harkisheimer Avenue. William Harkisheimer was one of the developers of the Edgewood subdivision and probably Murray Hill Heights also. In later years, officials changed the street’s name to Murray Drive. The County purchased the land for the park in 1947, and acquired another small portion in 1961. Since Murray Hill’s oldest house was built in 1897, the area has grown to over five thousand homes in 2003. The small neighborhood park provides children’s play equipment and two benches for relaxation, under a canopy of spreading oak trees.

Matthew Gilbert is a magnet school with a focus on career exploration. It is our expectation to provide as many opportunities as possible for the students to be exposed to as many different types of careers as available. In addition to talking about and encouraging the search of careers, Matthew Gilbert provides a Career Fair through out the year to show students the variety of professions out in the real world.

This park is named after A. Philip Randolph who grew up in Jacksonville and became one of the most important figures of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. A life-size bronze statue of Olympic Gold Medallist and Dallas Cowboy star, Bob Hayes, was added to the park in November 2002. Hayes grew up in Jacksonville, less than a mile from the park. Oakland Park is located in the Oakland section of downtown Jacksonville, and has been City property since the 1880’s. The residential community of Oakland emerged during the 1870’s and was oriented toward working-class families. West of the park lies the Old City Cemetery established in 1852, and along the park’s northern boundary, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, which is a part of the Old City Cemetery. The park has historical significance as the first playground established by the City of Jacksonville for African-American children. The park opened on July 4, 1918, through the efforts of noted Jacksonville humanitarian, Eartha M.M. White (1876-1974), and for ten years was under the direction of pioneer recreational leader Florida C. Dwight (1886-1977).

The Riverside Children’s Arts Center, a community ministry of Riverside Avenue Christian Church, offers children an outlet for creative expression in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment by providing a quality introduction to and appreciation of the arts.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

The Jacksonville Icemen, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets and AHL’s Manitoba Moose, announced they were awarded an ECHL membership in February 2017, beginning with the 2017-18 season. The Icemen begin their 72 game season at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday, October 14 against the Orlando Solar Bears.
