A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

The Cathedral Arts Project is the leading nonprofit provider of quality, comprehensive and ongoing instruction in the visual and performing arts for school-aged children in Northeast Florida.

CAP is offering free virtual and in-person courses in art as therapy, dance, media arts, music, and theatre for children of all ages!

Virtual courses are six weeks long and are offered on a quarterly basis. In-person courses are year-long and offered at schools and community centers throughout Duval County. Here are a few things to note:

Focusing the majority of our business on children, we bring ponies and farm animal displays (petting zoos) to birthday parties and other events such as church functions, family reunions, school carnivals, etc. Our saddled ponies come in various sizes to accommodate all children. Along with our saddled ponies, we also provide a miniature carriage pulled by a pony, which seats up to 3 children plus the driver. Adults are welcome to ride as well. The petting zoo allows up to 35 animals. Typically this includes: Goats, Sheep, Bunnies, Ducks, Chickens, Guinea Pigs and a Calf and Pot Bellied Pig. Everyone is welcome to feed the animals with food we have provided.

Wilma’s Little People’s School was founded in 1973 by Dr. Kay Johnson in order to give students in Jacksonville University’s early childhood courses an opportunity to work with young children. It is named in honor of Wilma Price Smith (1918-1985) as a living memorial to her and her lifelong devotion to children.

It is Wilma’s Little People’s School mission that each child has the right to have a developmentally appropriate education. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

The Museum of Science and History is a museum located  in downtown Jacksonville.  It is a private, non-profit institution located on the Southbank Riverwalk, and the city’s most visited museum. It specializes in science and local history exhibits.

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.

Students have the opportunity to enroll in the session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits at his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

Cesery Park is located in Arlington’s Lake Lucina neighborhood, at the corner of Cesery Boulevard and Columbine Street. The park and boulevard are named for William R. Cesery (1912-1996), a pioneer developer of Arlington who started the trend of building larger apartment complexes in Jacksonville. About 1950, he purchased forty acres for his first subdivision, which took its name from a large water hole that he called Lake Lucina. General Trading Company, whose principals, D.W. and F.W. Tredinick, founded the Jax Liquor Store chain, donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1961. The County created a tot lot for children, and the City took over its operation following consolidation in 1968. A wooden pavilion and picnic tables were added to the park in 1996.

Vagabond Coffee Company was founded by Will and Samantha Morgan in 2014.They dropped their Scotty camper in the middle of downtown Jacksonville and grew it into a full blown brick and mortar shop in the historic Murray Hill district of Jacksonville, Florida. We believe that everyone is a vagabond on a lifelong journey. Willowbranch Park playground is located right behind the Willowbranch Library. Other amenities include baseball field, basketball court, picnic tables, benches, a little creek and plenty of trees.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.
