Haley and Christian, parents of Camden, 6, and Luna, 3, live in Jacksonville, FL. They have talked about creating their own nonprofit organization for almost five years now and decided in 2023 to make it official. Their passion for raising awareness for cystic fibrosis comes from their son, who was diagnosed at two weeks old after several complications. Camden has had six hospitalizations, three surgeries, and numerous other cystic fibrosis-related complications. His care is managed by Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville, FL.

The Christoffersens created Camden’s Corner (a nonprofit organization) to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis and build a community for caregivers, as we know first-hand how hard it can be to be a caregiver and a parent to a medically complex child. Our fundraising events help us raise money towards a cure (through the CFF), support the care center in Jacksonville, and build programs for people living with cystic fibrosis and their caregivers.

How Do I Know If I Have Bedbugs?

If you have any thoughts that you may have bedbugs in your home, you’ll want to figure it out as quickly as possible. The sooner you begin working on eradicating them, the less severe your problems will be and the sooner you can go back to enjoying your life the way it was pre-bedbugs. The good news is, you can use heat as your secret weapon if you do determine there are bedbugs in your home. Bedbugs can be 100% killed when exposed to heat. Also, carpet cleaners work by putting out a hot steam. This means they can be used to help put an end to the reign of terror bedbugs may be bringing into your home. Keep in mind, carpet cleaners can also be used as mattress cleaners, which can come in handy for removing bedbugs from your mattresses and other pieces of furniture, such as couches and chairs. Spotting the signs of bedbugs

The first thing you want to do if you think you may have bedbugs in your home is to inspect everyone who lives in the home, visits often and anyone who has recently spent the night or a lot of time over. Check their bodies for little bug bites. The bites from a bedbug will look like little red dots, or almost like small pimples without heads on them. Keep in mind, not everyone will react the same way to bites, so some people may have bites that are more irritated and larger in size, while others may have very small marks.

Look on the furniture, in the carpet and anywhere else where you suspect bedbugs. Look for the bugs themselves, or signs that they have been there. You may find the live bugs, bodies of dead bugs or small flecks of what looks like dirt, but is really excrement from the bedbugs. Bedbugs themselves are very small, so you want to be sure you have a flashlight with you and are wearing your prescription glasses if you need them. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time seeing them. You may even want to grab a magnifying glass when you go on your bedbug search. If you find even one bedbug, then you should just assume you have an infestation, and treat it as such.

How to get rid of bedbugs once you determine you have them in your home

Once you determine there is a problem with bedbugs in your home, you’ll want to get rid of them as quickly as you can. This isn’t going to be easy and you should ask for help from everyone in the home. The more people you can get to assist you, the faster the process will go. Figure out which rooms have bedbugs and close off all the others, so you can focus on the ones you need to put your attention to.

The first thing you want to do is to strip all the bedding off the beds. Also, take the cushions off the furniture and take them to a cleaning area, such as outside or in the garage. Remove stuffed animals and area rugs from the rooms and put them in the cleaning area as well. Once you have all materials that the bedbugs can hide in out of the rooms, you will want to work on removing the bedbugs out of the carpet. The best way for you to do this is by using a vacuum to completely vacuum the carpet a couple times. Then, you’ll want to use the steam cleaner on the carpet to kill any bedbugs still in the carpet. Once again, you may want to go over the carpet twice with the steam cleaner as well.

Take all the bedding, stuffed animals and other material items and wash them in hot water. Once they are finished washing, dry them in the drier on the hottest heat. Use the steam cleaner on the area rugs in the cleaning area. Go over them each two times, just as you did the carpet. Once you have gone through each room and removed the bedbugs from all the items, you want to continue vacuuming and steam cleaning your carpet regularly.

Keep in mind, the heat from the steam cleaner will kill bedbugs in the carpet, on rugs and also on the furniture. You can also use the steam cleaner to keep your carpet looking good, as well as to remove allergens and dust mites from the carpet. This can help you to fend off allergies during allergy season. Plus, continuing to clean the carpet well can help prevent more outbreaks of bedbugs in the future. It’s a good idea to have a professional carpet cleaner come out at least once a year to do your carpet with their professional equipment.

Central Riverside is a gifted and talented magnet school. The Gifted and Academically Talented Program offers all students an enriched academic learning experience. Classes include more in-depth application of skills through special projects and hands-on experiences. Cesery Park is located in Arlington’s Lake Lucina neighborhood, at the corner of Cesery Boulevard and Columbine Street. The park and boulevard are named for William R. Cesery (1912-1996), a pioneer developer of Arlington who started the trend of building larger apartment complexes in Jacksonville. About 1950, he purchased forty acres for his first subdivision, which took its name from a large water hole that he called Lake Lucina. General Trading Company, whose principals, D.W. and F.W. Tredinick, founded the Jax Liquor Store chain, donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1961. The County created a tot lot for children, and the City took over its operation following consolidation in 1968. A wooden pavilion and picnic tables were added to the park in 1996.

In this comprehensive series, you and your partner/coach will increase your confidence in the birthing process as you gain a better understanding of what to expect. The series includes information on stages and phases of labor, pain management, cesarean birth, postpartum care and normal newborn characteristics.

Expectant parents are encouraged to complete classes between the 32nd-37th weeks so register early, as space is limited.

Please note: Some breathing and relaxation is included in this class but you will not practice on the floor. For couples desiring more practice on breathing and relaxation techniques, we offer a supplemental one night class called Comfort Measures.

Gifted Program at CLE

The Gifted Program is an enrichment curriculum to stimulate and encourage creative learning for students. The classroom uses divergent tasks to take the students outside their nine dots. They are challenged with problem solving to develop critical thinking skills. This approach requires alternative ideas. There are several projects that require problem solving to create an acceptable solution. In addition to hands on projects, they go on many field trips to learn firsthand the culture and creative methods of each place visited. A real memorable learning experience engrained in each child.

Students in Gifted Class have unique opportunities to receive a participatory and experimental approach to learning. The students achieve hands on levels of learning and knowledge not available in text books.

In order for a child to be in the Gifted Program, they must be first recommended to the Guidance office by their teacher or parents can request testing. Your child’s homeroom teacher is your first point of contact at the school. Once they are recommended, they will be tested to see if they qualify for gifted services.

Chuck Rogers Park is located in Mandarin, north of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and Orange Picker Rd. Sometime between 1968-1977, a borrow pit was excavated on part of the site, which was later used as a private landfill. The efforts of the City, Councilman Dick Kravitz, and the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club led to the purchase of the site in 1995 and its development as Mandarin’s first soccer park, which opened for the inaugural game March 7, 1997. An additional 1.1-acre parcel for the park was donated to the City in 1998. The park is named for Chuck Rogers (1909-1980), who worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. for 41 years. He started and ran the City’s youth leagues in all sports, was the guiding light in the tremendous rise of slow-pitch softball in the City, served for many years as the grand marshal for the City’s parades, and much more. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

In my years of experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of CPR, AED, and First Aid training, especially when it comes to our little ones. Concord Park is located in the in the Lake Forest section of northwest Jacksonville, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and U.S. Interstate 95. After filing of the first plat in 1926, it was not until around 1944 that development began again in Lake Forest, whose streets and parks exhibit an American Revolutionary War theme. Concord Park is one of two half-oval parks that were named and platted by the developers in 1944. Battles at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775 between the colonial Minutemen and the British redcoats marked the beginning of the War. Through the years, the park has remained a small, neighborhood facility with play equipment for the children, and a major improvement project in 1999 added picnic facilities, new benches, and a water fountain. With several towering pine trees providing shade and visual relief, the park offers a place for fellowship and relaxation.

Confederate Park playground in Jacksonville’s Historic Springfield area has unique, whimsical equipment that spurs the imagination. Surrounded by beauty and history the park also includes a serene fountain setting, statues, and a fenced 2.87-acre dog park.

Confederate Playground is located near downtown, in the Springfield section of north Jacksonville. First named Dignan Park, for a chairman of the Board of Public Works, it opened in 1907 and contained the City’s first supervised playground. The United Confederate Veterans chose Jacksonville as the site for their twenty-fourth annual reunion in 1914, which was attended by an estimated 48,000 former Confederate soldiers. Many of the activities took place in the park, and five months later it was renamed, Confederate Park. Troops, many from the nearby Armory, used the playground portion of the park for drill grounds and tent/hut encampments during both World Wars. The playground was permanently established as a separate facility from Confederate Park in the 1950’s, and today provides open space and recreational facilities for residents of the Springfield and downtown communities.

Born in 2014, Congaree and Penn began as a tiny rice farm. Since then, we’ve grown from four acres of rice paddies into a thriving farm of orchards, you pick vines and fields, and home to thousands of honeybees and fancy chickens. Congaree and Penn boast the largest (and youngest) Mayhaw orchard in the world, after planting over 5,000 trees throughout the past few years. Native to the South, this fruit-bearing tree has inspired us to seek out and plant other native and hearty Southern species.

In 2016, Congaree and Penn began juicing seasonal fruit from local farms to produce shrubs, our nod to a Colonial-era pastime. As we expand our orchard and pressing and milling operations, Congaree and Penn continue to innovate and introduce new produce and products.

We also fancy the farm as a stunning destination for weddings, farm dinners, tours, and workshops.

We are a 150-acre working family farm. Our farm is open the general public October through mid-November for our Fall Farm Days. We invite you to load up the family, come out to the country and spend a fun-filled day with us. Enjoy our sweet farm animals, wagon rides out to visit and feed the cows and calves while on your way to our 6-acre maze.
