The Murray Hill Playground boasts a water feature splash pad that is sure to keep kids cool after they have fun on the playground equipment

Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Murray Hill incorporated in 1916 and remained a separate municipality until its annexation by Jacksonville in 1925. In 1941, the heirs of J. Graeme Drew sold the park property to the City. Several athletic associations have used and helped maintain the playground over the years including the Murray Hill Youth Assoc., the Wright Youth Assoc., and most recently the Murray Hill Athletic Assoc. Improvement projects in 2001-2003 added two scoreboards, a walk path, fencing for two T-ball fields, a water feature, three portable shelters, a playscape and more.

The Art League of Jacksonville is offering affordable art classes for all ages and abilities throughout the Jacksonville area. Even more, we are expanding – reaching into more and more of the communities that make up Jacksonville with even more art classes. The Art League of Jacksonville also offers scholarships to our art classes for talented youth and adults who might not be able to afford art classes in Jacksonville. DLC Nurse & Learn (DLC) is a quality, child care facility for children with severe disabilities and medically complex conditions as well as “typically developing children. Children attending DLC can have a wide range of disabilities, including Downs Syndrome, Arthrogryposis, Tuberous Sclerosis, Tay-Sachs Disease, Cerebral Palsy and seizure disorders. Due to the special needs of the children served, DLC maintains a professional staff including a Registered Nurse, Nursing Assistants, Special Education Teachers, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists. We are an inclusion center, providing services for all of God’s beautiful children.

DLC currently offers full and part-time special education preschool, extended day for children (birth to 3 years) and for older students attending public school (3-22 years of age). DLC also provides full-time nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and vision therapy, therapeutic summer camp and M.O.V.E. mobility training. Vagabond Coffee Company was founded by Will and Samantha Morgan in 2014.They dropped their Scotty camper in the middle of downtown Jacksonville and grew it into a full blown brick and mortar shop in the historic Murray Hill district of Jacksonville, Florida. We believe that everyone is a vagabond on a lifelong journey. It’s our aim to create environments in all of our locations that allow everybody to come together as a community and enjoy a great cup of coffee.

The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.

Chuck Rogers Park is located in Mandarin, north of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and Orange Picker Rd. Sometime between 1968-1977, a borrow pit was excavated on part of the site, which was later used as a private landfill. The efforts of the City, Councilman Dick Kravitz, and the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club led to the purchase of the site in 1995 and its development as Mandarin’s first soccer park, which opened for the inaugural game March 7, 1997. An additional 1.1-acre parcel for the park was donated to the City in 1998. The park is named for Chuck Rogers (1909-1980), who worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. for 41 years. He started and ran the City’s youth leagues in all sports, was the guiding light in the tremendous rise of slow-pitch softball in the City, served for many years as the grand marshal for the City’s parades, and much more. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

At Little Seals Swim School, we offer one-on-one survival swim lessons to children as young as 8 months old. Babies/infants are taught to roll over and float on their backs. Once they reach a year old (or have been walking for about 6 weeks), they are taught to swim with their face in the water. The children are then taught to sequence the swimming with the floating in order to rest and breathe while swimming and playing in the water. They repeat the swim-float-swim sequence until they reach the steps or side. Once children are fully skilled, they have the opportunity to practice their skills fully clothed for “Silly Swim” lessons. Once lessons are completed, students are encouraged to maintain their skills by attending twice-monthly maintenance lessons (or semi-annual refresher lessons). Introduction to stroke lessons are, also, available for children that are developmentally ready (usually beginning between 4 and 6 years of age). Instructors are trained to present stroke lessons in a fun way that is relatable to young children.

The Swim Lesson Club indoor heated pool is located in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. Our pool is heated 92 degrees and perfectly designed for teaching all ages of swimming instruction.

We utilize endless swimming technology allowing us to easily correct technique and achieve excellent swimming conditioning for our developing swimmers. We offer videographer and stroke analysis that is very difficult to accomplish in a normal lap swimming pool. We partner with Swim Angelfish and utilize a special methodology ideal for children with water anxiety, sensory sensitivity, autism, or in need of adapted swimming instruction.

We partner with US Masters Swimming to provide top-notch swim coaching for our developing and advanced swimmers. Our adult students benefit from our partnership with US Masters Swimming and the Emperor Penguin adult learn to swim program/ self-teaching method.

Instructors are certified Lifeguards and often Red Cross WSI certified. The Swim Lesson Club instructor mentoring process allows good instructors to become amazing working directly with the owner for weeks or months before they will teach classes independently. Our instructors are the best and achieve consistent progress with their students. We are not satisfied for our students to stagnate in lessons, our team will collaborate to adjust strategies for each student to achieve results in a fun way. We specialize in private or semi-private classes to focus our attention on each student’s unique learning process.

ERC is open to any individual interested in the sport of rowing and welcomes people of all ages, with or without experience. We offer private lessons, a competitive youth development program for middle and high school students, and a masters program for adults.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

Gifted
When filling out a magnet application, you must select only one of these tracks. If you apply for both your application may be rejected by the magnet office. You can only apply for the gifted track if your student has been certified as gifted by DCPS, otherwise you must apply for the academically talented track. Both tracks have similar curricula and course progressions, because JWJ only offers advanced courses. Students at JWJ must maintain a 2.0 GPA in either program to keep their magnet seat, and must pass all classes, including electives, to be promoted.

Program Offered:

Murray Hill is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits at his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

Willowbranch Park playground is located right behind the Willowbranch Library. Other amenities include baseball field, basketball court, picnic tables, benches, a little creek and plenty of trees.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

Hammond Park is located in west Jacksonville at the intersection of 12th Street and Melson Avenue. In 1923, the property comprised part of a site used for airplane takeoffs and landings, and was named Paxon Field for the tract’s owner, E. H. Paxon. After opening in 1955 as Paxon Park, the name was changed to honor Duval County Commissioner Joseph F. Hammond (1885-1967), who, except for two years, served continuously from 1921-1961. Also he served as president of the National Association of County Officials. Three area schools and the Hammond Senior Center (formerly the Youth Center) reside near the park. The Little Gym is a recreational gymnastics center for ages 4 mo-12yr. We offer a safe and inspiring space to direct their energy, build confidence, and develop key skills. Our curriculum follows American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) milestones to help your child through important developmental moments. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

You and your child will explore the world of colors using the five senses! We will get a little messy through touch, taste, and a lot of fun! Our time together will include: circle time, using the senses, learning through stories, and nutritious, yummy snacks! This class is most appropriate for children aged 10 months to about 3.5 years old!

Classes are held at the Dubow Preschool in Mandarin at 3662 Crown Point Rd.

$5 per class
This class combines strength training and power walking. Class ends with a focus on improving core strength and flexibility. This 45 minutes we will focus on Mommy or Daddy, so any child who still sits in a stroller is welcome!
Please bring a towel, water, and a resistance band.
Classes are held Mondays only. More days will be added if there is demand.

Family Music & Movement classes incorporate songs with movement and various hand held instruments. Classes are mixed-age but geared to 0-2 yrs old.

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10.

Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.
