A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

Program Offered:

Lone Star is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the four-hour session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits as his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

Cesery Park is located in Arlington’s Lake Lucina neighborhood, at the corner of Cesery Boulevard and Columbine Street. The park and boulevard are named for William R. Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. I am offering Home School tutoring for parents who have chosen to home school their children for the 2020-2021 school year. Along with all grade levels, I also have experience teaching ESE students. Regardless of which option you choose for your student (Duval virtual, Duval homeroom, FLVS, or grave levels packets) I can help your student be successful. Sessions are offered online (phone, FaceTime or zoom) and in person. With many different packages available. For in person I will come to your home in proper PPE and teach multiple students if they reside in the same home for 2 hour sessions on all school days or twice a week. Time slots are first come first serve as I am only one person and cannot be everywhere at one time. My work hours are 8:00 am to 7:30 pm on school days beginning the first day of school.

Wilma’s Little People’s School was founded in 1973 by Dr. Kay Johnson in order to give students in Jacksonville University’s early childhood courses an opportunity to work with young children. Preschool: Ballet/Tap combination with acrobatics. These classes are available Monday-Thursday 2:45-3:45 p.m. (Please note on the contract if you prefer a certain day.) This year we are also offering a Monday morning class from 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Kindergarten: Ballet/Tap combination with acrobatics.

First through 4th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Acrobatics. Remember, each class is separate with their own recital dance and costume. For example; if your child takes all 4 disciplines they will have 4 costumes. First grade does not have a recital dance for acrobatics, therefore would not have a costume for that class.

Fifth through 12th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Pointe, and Acrobatics. Pointe class must be with approval. Ballet and Pointe are two separate classes. You must take Ballet in order to take Pointe. The recital dance is learned during the Ballet Technique class when both Pointe and Ballet students are present.

Open Ballet Class: This is an additional dance class available for those students already enrolled in ballet. This is a class focused on ballet technique, stretching, and conditioning. It will be taught on an advanced level. It is open to anyone currently in Junior, Advanced 1 or Advanced 2 classes.

Extra Classes: If you wish to take additional classes please indicate on your registration form by putting the number of classes next to each discipline. (For example; Ballet – 2.) Any serious student should be taking a minimum of 2 Ballet classes per week beginning in 5th grade. Younger students may also take additional classes with approval.

Student Assistants: Students 7th grade and older are eligible to assist with classes. A tuition discount will be offered for assisting. You must assist for the entire year in order to receive a discount. Priority is given to older dancers. Please note on your registration the day and times you are available

Classes are leveled as students mature. Please respect your teacher’s placement. If changes need to be made, they will be adjusted after classes begin. We realize students dancing in summer programs may need to be re-evaluated in the Fall

The Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association is a North Florida youth sport association founded by three area coaches in 1989 for the purpose of promoting the sport of volleyball for school age students in the city and surrounding areas. These coaches were Mary Andrew (Former Head Coach, FSCJ), Elise Bush (Head Coach, The Bolles School), and Brandy King (Former Head Coach, Mayport Middle School).

Central Riverside is a gifted and talented magnet school. The Gifted and Academically Talented Program offers all students an enriched academic learning experience. Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

Timuquana Park is located in the Timuquana Manor neighborhood of southwest Jacksonville, just east of bustling Roosevelt Boulevard. Hello, wonderful moms of our community!

I am delighted to introduce myself as a retired ER Nurse with a passion for ensuring the safety and well-being of families. In my years of experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of CPR, AED, and First Aid training, especially when it comes to our little ones. That’s why I’m passionate about offering Infant, Child, and Adult CPR classes, with a special focus on addressing choking emergencies.

How many times have we heard, “I didn’t know how”? It’s a phrase that echoes in emergency rooms across the country, and I am determined to change that narrative. Every family deserves to feel confident and prepared in the face of an emergency.

Convenience is key for busy moms, which is why I bring the training directly to your group. Whether it’s a Mommy and Me gathering, a playgroup, or any other community event, I’ll be there to equip you with life-saving skills in a comfortable and familiar setting.

Kilwins Jacksonville is located in the St Johns Town Center located next to P.F. Changs. Kilwins was originally founded in 1947 by Don & Katy Kilwin in Petoskey, Michigan. Dana and Vance opened their Kilwins as part of the grand opening of the St Johns Town Center on March 18, 2005. Smiles awaken and the senses come to life when customers enter the world of Kilwins. The Jacksonville store reflects the culture of a true confectionery shoppe.

Our doughnuts and glazes are all handmade from scratch in small batches throughout the day so your doughnut is delicious and fresh whenever you stop in.  And we use only the best ingredients–real, high quality butter, eggs, milk–you get the idea. We also seek out local partners who can offer exceptional ingredients.

We have about a dozen different rotating doughnuts on our menu plus doughnut sandwiches we lovingly call “doughwiches.”  We serve raised/yeast doughnuts, old-fashioneds, chocolate old-fashioneds and cake doughnuts. Our goal is to highlight seasonal and exciting flavors our baking team dreams up.

We now offer vegan doughnuts on Friday until sell out. Why only on Fridays you ask? Well, our kitchen space is limited and we want to make sure our vegan doughnuts are not just called vegan but are truly being made vegan. Only offering them on Fridays ensures there will not be any non vegan menu items fried in the oil before them. So come in on Friday and let us know what you think!

Music Together is an internationally recognized music and movement class for ages 0-5 years, and the adults who love them. Research-based, FUN, and developmentally appropriate, Music Together brings families and friends together in a unique, non-performance oriented environment, where children can become music makers for life.  $10 per class plus materials.  First-time visit to a Music Together class is FREE!

Bold City Brewery is locally owned and operated by Brian and Susan Miller. They are supported by the rest of the Miller family who all have a hand in the operations whether it be marketing, distributing, ordering supplies, cleaning tanks or doing what’s most important, brewing beer. Brian, the Brewmaster started with home brewing in 2002. He was a member of the Local Home Brewers Club here in Jacksonville prior to opening the brewery. His mother, Susan, is primarily responsible for managing the on-site Tavern.

Our city has a very large craft brew following and it’s our honor to create Jacksonville’s own selection of Craft Beer. We hope to see you soon! BE BOLD!

Our students are expected to develop a personal vision and plan for a four-year college/university degree with the intent to pursue an advanced degree.
