The Green Team Project (GTP) is a grassroots environmental non-profit project of the Tides Center whose focus is to empower and motivate people to make a difference environmentally through their own practices.

We are dedicated to changing long-term consumption behavior, increasing environmental awareness and stewardship, creating a greater sense of community, improving the quality of life, and having fun.

Green Team Project has educational programs for every member of the community. Through Green Teams, individuals, businesses, schools, and other organizations turn good intentions into concrete positive environmental action. The average graduate of a Green Team saves between 10-30% in each of the five resource areas: water, energy, solid waste, chemicals, and transportation, as well as a fair amount of money.

By using the team process our participants have the support and motivation they need to follow through on conservation actions, learn new things, and adopt long-lasting environmental habits.

The STEAM Cultural Passport is a Duval County program that provides students in Title I elementary schools with three to four educational field trips per year. These field trip experiences are connected to programs and offerings in Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts, and Mathematics. Organizations are selected through an application process, and events are scheduled according to available services to schools. The program is currently funded through federal dollars and provides cultural experiences to students, most of whom would not otherwise receive these kinds of opportunities.

During each trip, the students will board a St. Johns River Taxi boat from Friendship Fountain Park for a 2-hour tour of the river. While on board, they will rotate through a series of educational activities that correlate to state standards and focus on river science.

Students will learn to use water quality monitoring equipment, gather and interpret water quality data, record observational data on manatees and dolphins in the St. Johns River, examine river plants and animals for adaptations that enable them to thrive in the river ecosystem, and use their water quality data and what they learn on the trips to make predictions about the future of the St. Johns River.

Jax Stroller Strength lets moms workout with their kids and gives them a chance to connect with other mothers. Bootcamp style classes are offered every day of the week at the Beaches, Mandarin, Riverside and Nocatee locations. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

Confederate Playground is located near downtown, in the Springfield section of north Jacksonville. First named Dignan Park, for a chairman of the Board of Public Works, it opened in 1907 and contained the City’s first supervised playground. The United Confederate Veterans chose Jacksonville as the site for their twenty-fourth annual reunion in 1914, which was attended by an estimated 48,000 former Confederate soldiers. Many of the activities took place in the park, and five months later it was renamed, Confederate Park. Troops, many from the nearby Armory, used the playground portion of the park for drill grounds and tent/hut encampments during both World Wars. The playground was permanently established as a separate facility from Confederate Park in the 1950’s, and today provides open space and recreational facilities for residents of the Springfield and downtown communities.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

This park is named after A. Philip Randolph who grew up in Jacksonville and became one of the most important figures of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

Willowbranch Park playground is located right behind the Willowbranch Library. Other amenities include baseball field, basketball court, picnic tables, benches, a little creek and plenty of trees.

Bold City Brewery is locally owned and operated by Brian and Susan Miller. They are supported by the rest of the Miller family who all have a hand in the operations whether it be marketing, distributing, ordering supplies, cleaning tanks or doing what’s most important, brewing beer. Brian, the Brewmaster started with home brewing in 2002. He was a member of the Local Home Brewers Club here in Jacksonville prior to opening the brewery. 1748 Bakehouse was born from the kitchens of (most recently Flour and Fig) My Grandmother’s Pie and Provision Goods created by Allison and Kurt D’Aurizio. First Coast Rowing Club is a non-profit athletic program open to all middle and high school students grades 7-12 in the Jacksonville area. Their team has proven successful with more than 100 state titles and 5 national championships. Athletes will learn the skills to become competitive rowers as well as dedicated team players and leaders.
