A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

I’m a DONA International Certified Birth Doula based in Jacksonville, FL. My initial introduction to this career was watching the reality show called “Meet the Cromarties”; Antonio Cromartie’s wife was giving birth to his 13th and their 5th baby together. She had an at-home water birth and the engagement of the doula enlightened me. The doula helped her manage the pain with no medication, was supportive and comforting. I was genuinely, in awe. That’s when I said, “that’s what I want to do!”

Musical Moments is an early childhood music studio. We proudly offer Kindermusik, the world’s leading provider of music and movement programs for children birth thru age 7. Family Support Services of North Florida (FSSNF) is the lead agency for foster care, adoption and family preservation in Duval and Nassau counties. Through community-based care, FSS provides services and programs to help prevent child abuse and neglect, to promote a healthy family environment and to care for our community’s children in foster care.

The non-profit organization was established in 2001 to provide child protective services in Duval County, and was expanded to also serve Nassau County in 2007.

The Art Loft offers group or private lessons for children and adults. Classes include drawing and painting techniques for the beginner and advanced artist. In addition to classes, The Art Loft can be rented for birthday parties, baby showers, “girls’ night out” parties, etc.

Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. Florida Dwight (1886-1977), the playground’s first recreation director, pioneered organized recreation for the City’s African-American community from 1918 (with the opening of Oakland Park) until her retirement in 1950. Hammond Park is located in west Jacksonville at the intersection of 12th Street and Melson Avenue. In 1923, the property comprised part of a site used for airplane takeoffs and landings, and was named Paxon Field for the tract’s owner, E. H. Paxon. After opening in 1955 as Paxon Park, the name was changed to honor Duval County Commissioner Joseph F. Hammond (1885-1967), who, except for two years, served continuously from 1921-1961. In 1994 a major renovation of the ball fields occurred, and an improvement project in 2004 added a new building with a two-story scorebox, restrooms, and a handicap-accessible concession stand.

It is a non-profit organization under the International MOMS Club umbrella that provides a sense of support and community for both stay-at-home and work-at-home moms in a fun, inclusive environment. They do their fair share of playing, from playdates to moms’ nights out, but they also give back to the community through various fundraising efforts. Are you having problems learning how to skateboard? Be taught all of the fundamentals of skateboarding fast in a one-week camp. We will teach you the basics of skateboarding such as how to balance, push, turn, proper foot placement, and how to stop. Irrespective, of where you are at.. you can benefit from individualized instruction to meet your current skill level.

How to Start:

Equipment: We recommend a board and a full set of safety gear. This includes: a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards. Rental equipment is available.

Visit your local Jacksonville Public Library for weekly story time events as well as plenty of fun and resources for the entire family.

Kids can use a real hammer and build something great at one of the various Build and Grow Clinics at Lowes. Registration opens a few weeks before each clinic’s date.

The Kids Workshops are FREE how-to clinics for children. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin.

Jacksonville Armada FC are an announced professional soccer team to be based in Jacksonville, Florida. They are scheduled to join the North American Soccer League (NASL) for the 2015 season. They will initially play their home games at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in Downtown Jacksonville.

M3Zone … Motivating Maximum Movement! This unique after school program places a special emphasis on combating childhood obesity. It’s focus is keeping kids active and encouraging healthy eating habits. Education, social and art components round out the program, making it a great experience for kids.

M3Zone offers activities for ages 5 through 12.

M3Zone activities are underway now at select locations and coincide with the Duval County Public Schools calendar. Daily activities are offered from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year.
