Mellow Mushroom is an immersive experience of color, art, music and light, providing a delicious escape from the mundane. We started with pizza, but didn’t stop there, spreading our artistic delight to a broad array of salads, hoagies, calzones and beers. Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10.

Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat.

Motion Sweets was in established in March 2011 and is located in Riverside (Historic Five Points). Since its inception, baker Megan V. Suggs has been providing Jacksonville and surrounded areas high quality American and French pastries and daring new ventures into the uncharted territories of baking.  What started out as a flea market weekend hobby has transformed into a successful retail & wholesale operation.

First through 4th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Acrobatics.  Remember, each class is separate with their own recital dance and costume.  For example; if your child takes all 4 disciplines they will have 4 costumes.  First grade does not have a recital dance for acrobatics therefore would not have a costume for that class. 

Fifth through 12th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Pointe, and Acrobatics. Pointe class must be with approval.  Ballet and Pointe are two separate classes.  You must take Ballet in order to take Pointe.  There is however one costume for the two classes.  The recital dance is learned during the Ballet Technique class when both Pointe and Ballet students are present.

Ringhaver Park is located in southwest Jacksonville, extending south from 118th Street, along the western border of the Ortega River. The City acquired the land comprising the park in 1971, 1972, 1996, and 2000. The park is named for Lambert C. Ringhaver (1910-1976), whose family made a memorial donation for the initial park development, which has grown from 36 acres in 1977 to 576 acres in 2003. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

In order to join the Pawsitive Reading program, children AND at least one parent/guardian must first attend a one-time Pawsitive Reading orientation. We offer several orientations each month. Upcoming orientation dates and sign-up links are below. Advance registration is required.

Please note: We are unable to offer Pawsitive Reading orientations in June and July due to JHS Summer Camp.

Orientations will take place in either the JHS Education Center or Conference Room (both are located upstairs, above the Adoption Center). Our address is 8464 Beach Blvd. Please arrive on time. The orientation will be around 40 minutes in length.

After attending an orientation, children and an adult chaperone may come to JHS to read to the animals anytime our Adoption Center is open (12pm-7pm on weekdays, 10am-5pm on weekends). Participants must sign in and out at the front desk when visiting JHS to read.

To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Children may read to either dogs or cats and may bring their reading materials or borrow books from our Pawsitive Reading library.

Participants will receive a free book courtesy of The Jim Moran Foundation while supplies are available.

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

The Ortega Hills Playground is located in the Ortega Hills area across from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The name Ortega derives from Joseph de Ortega, a judge during the second Spanish occupation of Florida from 1783-1821. In 1804, when John McIntosh bought the plantation that is present-day Ortega, he named it for the judge who facilitated his purchase of the property. Development of Ortega Hills began in 1954, and Devco Inc. donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1959. In recent years the local Community Association, led by its tireless founder Charles Zilla, lobbied for a new park that resulted in a major renovation in 2001. Park usage then increased dramatically, as people rushed to use the new facilities, which included landscaping and a walking/jogging trail around the perimeter.

Developed during the Great Depression and subsequent recession of 1937, the organization that has become Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. (JALA) was born when a group of Jacksonville Bar attorneys banded together to provide legal services to those in need. Called different names over the years including Duval County Legal Aid Association, it was officially named Jacksonville Area Legal Aid in 1973. The organization achieved 501(c)3 status in 1976. JALA now serves 17 counties of North Florida including Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor and Union.

JaxKick Stars offer structured soccer classes for boys and girls ranging from 2 to 9 years old. Classes meet once a week for 30 minutes for 8 weeks session. Our fees are prorated weekly so new kids can join our program anytime during a session. Virtual courses are six weeks long and are offered on a quarterly basis. In-person courses are year-long and offered at schools and community centers throughout Duval County. Here are a few things to note:

Pura Bean Coffee was founded on the principal of enjoying coffee and life. It all began after several excursions to Costa Rica where we fell in love with the local coffee and lifestyle. As raving fans we decided it would be fun to make our own coffee back home in Jacksonville, FL. Using our daughter’s popcorn popper we began learning the craft of roasting and creating blends of coffee for friends and family. Visit your local Jacksonville Public Library for weekly story time events as well as plenty of fun and resources for the entire family.

Kids can use a real hammer and build something great at one of the various Build and Grow Clinics at Lowes. Registration opens a few weeks before each clinic’s date.

The Kids Workshops are FREE how-to clinics for children. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin.

Jacksonville Armada FC are an announced professional soccer team to be based in Jacksonville, Florida. They are scheduled to join the North American Soccer League (NASL) for the 2015 season. They will initially play their home games at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in Downtown Jacksonville.
