In order to join the Pawsitive Reading program, children AND at least one parent/guardian must first attend a one-time Pawsitive Reading orientation. We offer several orientations each month. Upcoming orientation dates and sign-up links are below. Advance registration is required.

Please note: We are unable to offer Pawsitive Reading orientations in June and July due to JHS Summer Camp.

Orientations will take place in either the JHS Education Center or Conference Room (both are located upstairs, above the Adoption Center). Our address is 8464 Beach Blvd. Please arrive on time. The orientation will be around 40 minutes in length.

After attending an orientation, children and an adult chaperone may come to JHS to read to the animals anytime our Adoption Center is open (12pm-7pm on weekdays, 10am-5pm on weekends). Participants must sign in and out at the front desk when visiting JHS to read.

To ensure that our animals benefit from the program, we ask that readers spend at least 30 minutes reading – there is no maximum time limit.

Children may read to either dogs or cats and may bring their reading materials or borrow books from our Pawsitive Reading library.

Participants will receive a free book courtesy of The Jim Moran Foundation while supplies are available.

Program Offered:

Lone Star is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the four-hour session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits as his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

Baymeadows Regional Park has a nice playground, soccer fields, and walking path around the lake.

The 9A/Baymedows Regional Park site is situated between Baymeadows Road East and State Road 9A in southeast Jacksonville. The City purchased the 52-acre parcel from Disston Ranch in June 2002. Volunteer representatives from neighborhoods in the area, known as Baywatch, intent is to keep an eye on the development, growth, transportation, zoning, and parks and recreation issues relating to the area. This is Surf into Summer’s 19th year teaching campers to master the waves, making it the longest running surf camp on the First Coast. We offer surf camps in both Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach.

At Surf into Summer, campers will learn from the top surfers in North Florida. Campers will not only learn the basics of paddling and how to stand up on a board, but also important knowledge on beach and water safety from the CPR certified instructors.

Jacksonville Girls High School Rugby team is open to all girls 14-19 from all schools and homeschooling. No try outs or experience is necessary. The team strives to teach the girls a new sport, team work and build self confidence.

First Coast Center for the Arts is a facility that provides activities for every family member no matter what age. We offer Dance, Karate, Music, Yoga, Pilates, Aerobic Dance.

We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Jordan Park is 1.5 acres of wooded park with a large playground area, trees, covered picnic pavilions, grills, a basketball court, and a community center. 

The Jordan Park Community Center is a 2000 square foot of space – housing both Beaches Habitat and the community center. Hours normal hours of operation are noon to 6 pm.  The Community Center is available for rent with a 4-hour minimum of $100, plus a $200 refundable security deposit.

Cesery Park is located in Arlington’s Lake Lucina neighborhood, at the corner of Cesery Boulevard and Columbine Street. The park and boulevard are named for William R. Cesery (1912-1996), a pioneer developer of Arlington who started the trend of building larger apartment complexes in Jacksonville. About 1950, he purchased forty acres for his first subdivision, which took its name from a large water hole that he called Lake Lucina. General Trading Company, whose principals, D.W. and F.W. Tredinick, founded the Jax Liquor Store chain, donated the land for the park to Duval County in 1961. Growing Together Behavioral Center is one of Jacksonville’s premier schools for children with autism and developmental disabilities. We pride ourselves on being a school where each child is treated as an individual, and educational plans are tailored to their personal needs.

For the 2018-2019 school year, we are excited to partner with 25 students with autism and other developmental disabilities, ages 3 through 15 years. Our school is unique from the public school settings, as we are able to focus on the specific needs of each individual child, whether academic, life skills, or behavioral. Atlantic Beach is a terrific beach to explore with families. Bull Park is located just a few blocks from the ocean and offers a picnic zone or alternate play area (shaded playground!) if you or your little one needs a break from the sand and surf. There is not a lot of parking located near the beach, so your best bet is to find parking at either Jack Russell Park, Bull Park, or the Beaches Town Center area and walk to the ocean. From most of the Atlantic Beach public access points, you are a short to medium size walk to the Beaches Town Center, where you can find lovely local dining options and shopping alike!
