A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.

Angelina Danese Park is located in south Jacksonville, at the intersection of Danese Court and St. Augustine Road. The site comprised part of the Philips community that was established in the last half of the 1800’s. Alexander and Angelina Danese, who arrived in America as immigrants from Italy in 1885, had twelve children following their marriage in 1898. The couple established their home on the park property in 1929, and after their deaths the children wanted to honor their parents’ memory. Their son Emanuel Danese, and his wife Mary Margaret, later donated the property to the city in 1973 for use as a passive public park – in honor of his parents and with the stipulation that it be named for his mother. But the site remained a vacant tract until the city, with the aid of City Councilmen Matt Carlucci and Reggie Fullwood, developed the property as a neighborhood park, which opened in March 2003.

Infants 3 to 12 months with parents or caregivers will be asked to remove their shoes and sit on the floor. Babies make noise, we know that. Their engagement is welcome in all ways. As parents and caregivers, you will want to take care of your babies, we know that too. Snuggling, feeding and changing are all part of taking care of them and totally allowed throughout the event.

I specialize in baby + child portraiture because some of the most precious photographs I have are those of my mother when she was a child. She died in 2015, and all that are left are the photos. Family Music & Movement classes incorporate songs with movement and various hand held instruments. Classes are mixed-age but geared to 0-2 yrs old.

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

“I am very excited about bringing this high-quality school choice option to our community,” said Jacksonville Classical Academy Chairman of the Board, John D. Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Hillsdale College charter schools perform well and provide a challenging and inspirational educational experience.”

Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. Our charter application was unanimously approved by the Duval County School Board on May 7, 2019.

At Tumblrz we offer an outstanding minis program that is specially designed for the 3 to 6 year old tumbler. Our challenging and fun program focuses on various aspects of the child’s physical, mental, and social development while having lots of fun! We begin with a foundation of gymnastics to build strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. Your child will learn various skills through movement such as balance and concentration when working on the beam. They will test their strength when learning basic gymnastics skills such as forward rolls and cartwheels. This sets the groundwork for moving into more advanced tumbling and gymnastics skills when they are older but not only that, these skills when started young tend to promote healthy growth and development that will follow them well into adulthood.

At Tumblrz, learning opportunities are pushed to the next level when we incorporate colors, shapes, and numbers along with using hand, eye, and foot coordination. By combining the physical and mental aspect we are able to promote the development of the child’s neurological pathways, positively effecting mood, memory, attention span, and behavior.

The multitude of skills learned in our minis tumbling program are endless! Your child will learn how to take turns, follow directions, and to respect others and their space. All of this allows the child to learn social interactions and build confidence. We know some children may be timid when trying new things. Debbie’s Dance Company offers extensive and diverse programs in classical Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Hip-hop, Baton, Modern, Acrobatics, Lyrical, and Flexibility.

For over 20 years, Debbie’s Dance Company has offered a complete dance program for beginning thru advanced and semiprofessionals, ages 2 1/2 and up. We believe that for whatever reason you choose to dance – fun, exercise, social or artistic benefits, or the sheer love of music – our responsibility is not only to teach the technical aspect of dance, but also to inspire children to “desire to be the best he or she can be.”
