Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. In 1929, the City’s second playground for African-American children was established there and named La Villa Playground. Florida Dwight (1886-1977), the playground’s first recreation director, pioneered organized recreation for the City’s African-American community from 1918 (with the opening of Oakland Park) until her retirement in 1950. To honor her years of devoted work, the playground was renamed in 1983, and then designated a local historic landmark in 1995.

The Jacksonville Galloway Training Program meets on Saturday mornings at various locations across the Jacksonville area, and follows Jeff Galloway’s training guidelines to get you safely across the finish line of a half or full marathon if your goals are to finish, or to achieve a ‘PR’. Our group runs feature walking breaks at regular intervals based on your skill level. Pace groups (of usually 8-15) are set up according to current fitness level, and a Group Leader is assigned to keep the speed slow enough for all members, and to enforce walk breaks from the beginning to the end.
Running is more fun when running together, as each member is motivated to run more often, and stay injury free. As you share stories, (gossip, issues) and pull one another along, the miles go by much more quickly. Lifelong friendships are formed in these mission-oriented, but laid back groups. Owners of European Leather Gallery, Nancy and Dennis Kulm, have been married for more than 25 years. Their discovery of Stressless® furniture was by pure accident. About three months later, Dennis, who had a history of terrible back problems realized his back didn’t hurt anymore. Private Full Time Islamic School. Al-Furqan Academy was established in August of 1997 by some of the same founding members of ICNEF (Islamic Center of Northeast Florida). They saw the immense need for an Islamic Elementary School in the city of Jacksonville, and they acted upon it. First, written plans were formulated, classrooms were established within the Masjid, staff was recruited and numerous other plans and procedures developed. The Mandarin Museum and the 1898 St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse for African-American Children are open every Saturday from 9-4 at Walter Jones Historical Park, 11964 Mandarin Rd. The museum features the Civil War steamship Maple Leaf which was sunk in the St. Johns River at Mandarin Point in 1864. On display are many artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, Civil War soldiers’ uniforms and an interactive exhibit about the diving operation that recovered the objects belonging to the soldiers. The historic schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse left in Duval County. While visiting, children can pick-up a park and museum scavenger hunt that helps them learn about important objects or sit in an old school desk and color or read a book, and learn about how different school was over 100 years ago. Following the visit to the museums, you will want to stroll the beautiful 10-acre Walter Jones Historical Park, walk along the St. Johns River on the boardwalk and imagine being dropped back in time to a quiet life of the early 1900s. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.

Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (Grades 2-12) – Auditioning Now for the Fall Semester of the 2020-21 Season!

JCC offers an exciting and unique music experience for children who have a passion for singing. The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is beginning its new season on September 15th, 2020. Please encourage your aspiring singers to audition with us for the upcoming season if they are interested in enhancing their music education and opportunities.

While prior musical training is not necessary to participate, an audition is required for singers in grades 2-12. To ensure that we are keeping your health and safety our top priority, auditions can be scheduled virtually or in-person with social distancing and a mask required. There is no fee to audition. Need-based scholarships are available.

Auditions are quick and simple. There is no need to have a prepared audition piece.

Program Offered:

Murray Hill is a tuition-free public high school that operates two sessions per day – morning and afternoon. Students have the opportunity to enroll in the session that best fits their personal schedule so they have the flexibility to earn a quality education while working, caring for family, or managing other commitments.

Once enrolled, the school works with the student to create a personalized academic plan to graduate, and immediately helps the student to start earning credits at his/her own pace. Courses are computer-based to help the student to focus and track progress, and certified teachers provide individualized support.

The school serves ages 16 to 21. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

There is no cost to attend. All programs are free.

Jacksonville Girls High School Rugby team is open to all girls 14-19 from all schools and homeschooling. No try outs or experience is necessary. The team strives to teach the girls a new sport, team work and build self confidence.

Baymeadows Regional Park has a nice playground, soccer fields, and walking path around the lake.

The 9A/Baymedows Regional Park site is situated between Baymeadows Road East and State Road 9A in southeast Jacksonville. The City purchased the 52-acre parcel from Disston Ranch in June 2002. Volunteer representatives from neighborhoods in the area, known as Baywatch, intent is to keep an eye on the development, growth, transportation, zoning, and parks and recreation issues relating to the area. Baywatch has had a significant role in the planning and funding for the Park in their coordination with Councilmember Graham and the Mayor’s Office. In December 2003, the Master Plan of the Regional Park was completed. Phase I development of the Soccer fields, infrastructure, playground, pavilions, and restrooms are open to the public by January 2008. Future Phase II will include the construction of the Baseball Fields, Fishing Pier, and Tennis Courts.

The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation was founded by former tennis professional and ’96 Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

Murray Hill Playground is located in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. One of the City’s oldest schools, Ruth N. Upson Elementary (formerly the Murray Hill School built in 1916)) resides just northwest of the park. Murray Hill incorporated in 1916 and remained a separate municipality until its annexation by Jacksonville in 1925. In 1941, the heirs of J. Graeme Drew sold the park property to the City. Several athletic associations have used and helped maintain the playground over the years including the Murray Hill Youth Assoc., the Wright Youth Assoc., and most recently the Murray Hill Athletic Assoc. Improvement projects in 2001-2003 added two scoreboards, a walk path, fencing for two T-ball fields, a water feature, three portable shelters, a playscape and more.

My initial introduction to this career was watching the reality show called “Meet the Cromarties”; Antonio Cromartie’s wife was giving birth to his 13th and their 5th baby together. She had an at-home water birth and the engagement of the doula enlightened me. The doula helped her manage the pain with no medication, was supportive and comforting. I was genuinely, in awe. The playground at J.P. Small Park was renamed in June 2007 to honor Eugene M. GLover. Chuck Rogers Park is located in Mandarin, north of the intersection of San Jose Blvd. and Orange Picker Rd. Sometime between 1968-1977, a borrow pit was excavated on part of the site, which was later used as a private landfill. The efforts of the City, Councilman Dick Kravitz, and the Jacksonville Youth Soccer Club led to the purchase of the site in 1995 and its development as Mandarin’s first soccer park, which opened for the inaugural game March 7, 1997. An additional 1.1-acre parcel for the park was donated to the City in 1998. The park is named for Chuck Rogers (1909-1980), who worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. for 41 years. He started and ran the City’s youth leagues in all sports, was the guiding light in the tremendous rise of slow-pitch softball in the City, served for many years as the grand marshal for the City’s parades, and much more. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

Murray Drive Playground is one of four City parks in the Murray Hill section of west Jacksonville. The property was platted in 1910, and the street along the site’s eastern side was originally named Harkisheimer Avenue. DLC Nurse & Learn (DLC) is a quality, child care facility for children with severe disabilities and medically complex conditions as well as “typically developing children. AIR FORCE JROTC MAGNET The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a magnet program that focuses on leadership education to instill values of citizenship, character, and integrity. Upon completing three years of the Air Force JROTC program, students receive a Certificate of Completion. If cadets elect to enlist in the Armed Forces, the Certificate of Completion from the JROTC program will allow them to enlist as a pay grade E-3 in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or an E2 pay grade in the Marine Corp.

HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY The Health Sciences Academy offers a unique educational experience to students who wish to pursue a career in the health care industry. Upon graduating from Andrew Jackson, students have the entry-level job skills needed to successfully pursue careers in many of the various health-related occupations. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience and rigorous critical thinking skills. This program also enables students to meet high school graduation requirements while earning college credits.

Our Community Education program provides quality services and programs after-school that involve various groups and agencies throughout our community. These include classes, homeowner’s groups, Scout troops, support groups, health and crime-related workshops and more.

We offer classes designed for the beginning dancer through the most advanced in ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and hip hop. For those looking for something a little different, we offer a well rounded Musical Theatre program, with emphasis on the “triple threat” of voice, drama and dance. In addition, we offer an adult ballet that is perfect for beginning adults, or former dancers who wish to maintain their form and technique.

Dancers are evaluated at the beginning and end of each year and are placed into the proper level based on their ability. Our goal at Academy of Dance is to provide our dancers with the strong technique and traditions of dance through proper education and training, exposure and celebration.

SMART Couples is conducting FUN and FREE remote relationship-strengthening classes that help couples, parents, and stepfamilies learn simple and effective skills to build happy, successful, and life-long relationships. In our remote classes, couples and singles throughout Duval county can learn constructive conflict skills, stress management techniques, and even better money management all from the comfort of their homes.

ELEVATE: COUPLES WORKSHOP

Elevate: Taking Your Relationship to the Next Level is for dating, married, engaged, and cohabiting couples. The instructor will share nine important communication skills in every relationship and ways to increase positive communication, deal with differences, manage stress, set financial goals, and maintain a happy and healthy friendship bond. Couples will participate in fun relationship-strengthening activities with their partner during the workshop.

Before You Tie the Knot

Before You Tie the Knot is for couples and singles interested in marriage at some point in their lives. The instructor will share effective and proven skills to a happy, healthy relationship, such as commitment, positive communication, and positive bonds, as well as effective and proven skills for handling conflicts. She will also discuss the eight needs of every partner, parent and child, the rewards of positive parenting (including step parenting), the importance of money management, and the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle. Couples who attend all classes are eligible for a discount on their marriage license.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary school through postsecondary that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. It’s primary focus is to prepare students in the academic middle for four year college eligibility and completion.
