A comprehensive pediatric eye exam can diagnose many different vision disorders. Some of the more common eye conditions in children are: Your child may be nearsighted (myopia), farsighted (hyperopia) or have astigmatism. It is important that children who need glasses, wear them full time when they are young to develop good vision in each eye and three-dimensional vision. Dr. Schnipper and Dr. Brown offer comprehensive Eye Exams for children of all ages.

During your child’s comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity will be tested. This test measures the smallest object each eye can see at a certain distance. Normally, each eye will be done individually by covering one eye at a time. It may be necessary to tape a patch over a child’s eye to keep him from peeking. There are two types of charts used when testing children’s visions.

The use of the Snellen chart is the most common way to test visual acuity. This chart letters and numbers that decrease in size. When taking the test, the distance between the patient and the chart is 20 feet. 20/20 vision is normal. If a person has 20/40 vision, they see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at forty feet. If a person has 20/200 vision, they are legally blind. They only see at twenty feet what a normal eye sees at two hundred feet. If they have 20/15 vision, they see better than normal. They see at twenty feet what the normal eye would have to bring in to fifteen feet to see.

For children that do not know letters and numbers, they can be tested with the Tumbling E chart. To take this test, the child points his/her finger in the same direction as the E is pointing. Children who are younger than four may have trouble with this test so there are several different tests used to obtain a child’s accurate visual acuity.

Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park comprised a portion of the Town of La Villa, which was subdivided and incorporated after the Civil War and remained independent until annexed by Jacksonville in 1887. After the City purchased the land in 1904, it became a park for the area’s white residents known as La Villa Park. In 1929, the City’s second playground for African-American children was established there and named La Villa Playground. My name is Diana, creator, and owner of Attia Designs, a minority-owned company. I named my company after my 4-year-old daughter, Isabella Delali Attia. Attia means gift in West Africa and I thought it was so appropriate because she is a gift and blessing in my life. I was born and raised in Belize, CA, and came to the U.S. in 2007 to further my education. I am married to an amazing hubby and I have two children, Bella (4) and Enzo (2). I also work full time for a healthcare organization and teach sprint part-time at the local YMCA. I am a busy bee! Regardless, I find it important to carry out your passion and make time for the things that make you happy.

I launched Attia Designs on June 6, 2020. So, why earrings? I am completely obsessed with earrings and came across polymer clay earrings while browsing the internet one day. Quarantine from the pandemic gave me a lot of much needed time to explore my passions. I didn’t put much thought into planning, I dove straight into it and a month later here we are. I have had help from other amazing women on social media, who have been so encouraging. The best part for me is putting my own style and unique perspective into every design. I put a lot of love and thought into each earring. The collection you see is an expression of my style. I switch up on any given day and love to add variety.

Children are not born with clear vision, but with visual potential. Visual development takes place during the first several years of life. Just like learning a language, children are also learning to see the world around them. Ophthalmic problems or even routine refractive errors (the need for glasses) can interfere with a child’s visual development.

It is estimated that about 80% of a child’s learning is visually based. Good vision is not only necessary for a child to learn to read and advance academically, but also for appropriate social development, behavior, self-esteem, and coordination.

Since younger children cannot express or verbalize their vision, and older children may not be aware enough to understand they have a visual problem; it is important to have any concerns evaluated. Pediatric eye evaluations and treatment differ greatly from the typical eye problems of adults. Children should be seen by someone with special skills and knowledge in pediatric eye care.

A classical model charter school is coming to Jacksonville in the Fall of 2020. It will be affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Parent Information Meetings are starting this October.

Rood. “The Barney Charter School Initiative is an excellent program and I am extremely impressed with its classical curriculum. Jacksonville Classical Academy will be located near downtown Jacksonville on Forest Street and is a tuition-free public charter school. The school’s classical education model will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

The first year will begin with kindergarten through 6th grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. The Jacksonville Youth Tennis Association (JYTA) is a single purpose community tennis organization (CTA) working to support and maintain tennis programs and services for children in the public communities of Jacksonville. Jacksonville FC has been established since 1977 and consists of 3 main programs – recreational, academy and travel (KYX) teams for players aged U5-U19. Timuquana Park is located in the Timuquana Manor neighborhood of southwest Jacksonville, just east of bustling Roosevelt Boulevard. Preschool: Ballet/Tap combination with acrobatics. These classes are available Monday-Thursday 2:45-3:45 p.m. (Please note on the contract if you prefer a certain day.) This year we are also offering a Monday morning class from 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Kindergarten: Ballet/Tap combination with acrobatics.

First through 4th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Acrobatics. Remember, each class is separate with their own recital dance and costume. For example; if your child takes all 4 disciplines they will have 4 costumes. First grade does not have a recital dance for acrobatics, therefore would not have a costume for that class.

Fifth through 12th grades may sign up for Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Pointe, and Acrobatics. Pointe class must be with approval. Ballet and Pointe are two separate classes. You must take Ballet in order to take Pointe. The recital dance is learned during the Ballet Technique class when both Pointe and Ballet students are present.

Open Ballet Class: This is an additional dance class available for those students already enrolled in ballet. This is a class focused on ballet technique, stretching, and conditioning. It will be taught on an advanced level. It is open to anyone currently in Junior, Advanced 1 or Advanced 2 classes.

Extra Classes: If you wish to take additional classes please indicate on your registration form by putting the number of classes next to each discipline. (For example; Ballet – 2.) Any serious student should be taking a minimum of 2 Ballet classes per week beginning in 5th grade. Younger students may also take additional classes with approval.

Student Assistants: Students 7th grade and older are eligible to assist with classes. A tuition discount will be offered for assisting. You must assist for the entire year in order to receive a discount. Priority is given to older dancers. Please note on your registration the day and times you are available

Classes are leveled as students mature. Please respect your teacher’s placement. If changes need to be made, they will be adjusted after classes begin. We realize students dancing in summer programs may need to be re-evaluated in the Fall

Willowbranch Park is located in the Riverside area, along the course of Willowbranch Creek. Former City Councilman John J. Griffin led the drive to create the park, and development began in 1916. Additional acreage was acquired southeast of Park Street between 1921 and 1925. Dr. Harold Hume donated 1700 azalea bushes around 1924 to beautify a portion of the grounds, while the Willowbranch Library opened at the park in 1930; and the creek was straightened and bulkheaded in 1934. Eventually four other small City parks/gardens were created from the park property – one south and one north of St. Johns Avenue and two along Park Street (in the 1950’s). Since its creation in 1974, Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) has worked to preserve and improve the park, along with the Willowbranch Park Improvement Committee that formed in 1999. Through the years it has remained one of the City’s most picturesque parks. At the instigation of Councilman Jim Overton in 2002, a bronze memorial plaque honoring Patricia Austin, the deceased wife of former mayor Ed Austin, was installed at the park in 2004. An immense live oak tree canopies two benches provided for the relaxation of visitors.

AIR FORCE JROTC MAGNET The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a magnet program that focuses on leadership education to instill values of citizenship, character, and integrity. Upon completing three years of the Air Force JROTC program, students receive a Certificate of Completion. If cadets elect to enlist in the Armed Forces, the Certificate of Completion from the JROTC program will allow them to enlist as a pay grade E-3 in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or an E2 pay grade in the Marine Corp.

HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY The Health Sciences Academy offers a unique educational experience to students who wish to pursue a career in the health care industry.
