Captain Alvarez is a fourth-generation Jacksonville local who has grown up fishing these waters. His love for the ocean started at a very young age, not only fishing but also surfing our beaches. You will be fishing on a 2016 Pathfinder 24-foot center console, powered by a Yamaha 300 horsepower outboard. We fish exclusively with Penn reels, most of which are paired on Ugly Stik rods. Spider Wire Ultra Cast braided line makes long-casting easier, and pulling those tough redfish out of the rocks. Most of the fishing is live bait, although Sebile Plugs and Berkley Gulp are always on the boat for that early morning trout bite or jigging the St. Johns River for flounder.

Donner Park, located in the Marsh Oaks area at the corner of Dutton Island Dr. West and George Street, consists of over 5 acres of park land. Activities include a full basketball court, a softball field, tennis courts, and a large sand playground area and the Gail Baker Community Center.

Beautifully shaded by oak and pecan trees, Donner Park is home to many of the City’s community activities, including outdoor summer movies, fall festival, flag football, baseball, and tennis. Outdoor bathrooms are open during week days.

Tough Guys Cookies & Sweets is OPEN in Oakleaf just across the street from Oakleaf Village Elementary. The head chef and owner is John Odom, former police officer and certified “Tough Guy.” John started this bakery with his friends and family as a way to showcase his love for baking, a love that was created at a young age thanks to the creativity and devotion of his grandmother.

Tough Guys is open Tuesday – Saturday 1pm-7pm. They offer oversized cookies in a large variety of flavors, including a few local favorites like strawberry and cream, toffee, and confetti (and of course, several versions of chocolate chip!). They also offer a wide array of creative cookie and ice cream combos, like “the drill,” which is a single cookie with a scoop of ice cream, or their signature ice cream sandwich–made with two cookies of your choice and a massive scoop of ice cream in the middle. “WHO WE ARE” St Johns Taekwondo is a certified Olympic Taekwondo Training Center. Club #7283 with USA Taekwondo the governing body for the Olympic Taekwondo games in the United States under the (WTF) World Taekwondo Federation. “WHAT WE DO” St Johns Taekwondo is passionate about seeing students grow through martial arts training. Our program is a South Korean based Taekwondo system used by the South Korean Military and the South Korean Presidential Body Guards. Taekwondo is known for devastating kicks but make no mistake it has many weapons in its arsenal. The hand techniques are practiced and conditioned by breaking objects such as boards, roof tiles and cement blocks. All the techniques from kicks, strikes, down to blocks were developed to maximize damage with every blow. We also practice Taegeuk “Poomse” meaning forms or patterns. These are pre-arranged fight sequences that are practiced to develop hand-eye coordination, timing, balance, power, speed, discipline and overall body structure.

“WHY WE DO IT” St Johns Taekwondo is headed up by Master Joe Gaines a 20 year veteran of the martial arts community. Master Gaines is currently a 4th Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt and has an Associate Level Coaches certification through USA Taekwondo. Atlantic Beach is a terrific beach to explore with families. Bull Park is located just a few blocks from the ocean and offers a picnic zone or alternate play area (shaded playground!) if you or your little one needs a break from the sand and surf. There is not a lot of parking located near the beach, so your best bet is to find parking at either Jack Russell Park, Bull Park, or the Beaches Town Center area and walk to the ocean. From most of the Atlantic Beach public access points, you are a short to medium size walk to the Beaches Town Center, where you can find lovely local dining options and shopping alike!

Skate park hours are 8 am to 10 pm. During inclement weather, rain or the bowl is wet, the skate park will be closed.

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. This is often the first beach we visit, primarily because of proximity to the Beaches Town Center. I told you I loved this place. The local, coastal vibe just makes me happy. When you are ready to put your toes in the sand, it is fairly easy to find public access parking. We seldom, if ever, pack a lunch when we go to Neptune Beach because you are just a short stroll to some pretty tasty restaurants. Our favorite stops on Neptune Beach days are MShack when we are in the mood for simple burger and fries, Poe’s Tavern, and, of course, Dreamette. Yes, I said Dreamette. There is a new location just behind the Starbucks. From Neptune Beach, you can get to Jarboe or Bull Park quickly by car or bike.
